The elements don't stop the brave and well-prepared.

Preparing for the unexpected should be the slogan for Pearl Izumi's new P.R.O. Barrier Lite Jacket. It was engineered using a lightweight blend of advanced materials and a smooth fit that keeps you shielded from the elements. Even better, it easily remains stowed and out of the way when the weather's nice.

Pearl Izumi constructed the jacket from its venerable P.R.O. Barrier Lite fabric. This is a lightweight, breathable material perfectly suited for the sort of weather changes that we often face during fall and winter afternoons on the road. Made from tightly-woven monofilament materials, the Barrier Lite fabric gives you protection from the elements while also allowing your torso to breathe and avoid moisture overload. Its versatility is one reason that it's able to be used either as a wind breaker on high-speed descents, as a rain protector during flash storms in the summer, or even as an extra layer to take along for winter rides — just in case.

The jacket has been anatomically designed to allow a layer underneath it, yet at the same time, it's cut close enough to the body to prevent excess fabric from flapping in the wind. Panels of Softshell Lite were also added to the composition, adding a bit of stretch to the jacket. An elasticized hem and cuffs maintain a secure fit over your jersey, and the jacket's full-length zipper makes entry and exit of the jacket an easy on-the-fly move. Finishing off the build, Izumi added reflective elements that increase your visibility to motorists in low-light conditions.

The Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Barrier Lite Jacket is available in five sizes from Small to XX-Large and in the colors Black/black, Screaming Yellow/black, Screaming Yellow/electric blue, True Red/black, and White.

Technical jacket but fit runs small

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it

This jacket is very technical and extremely light. It can pack down very small and fit in a jersey pocket. I would have kept it but the small sizing ran much smaller around the chest than other Pearl Izumi tops that I have from the PRO and Elite ranges. Unfortunately for me going to medium the arms are way too long, so I switched the Elite convertible jacket which has worked out really well.

Do you think the PRO would flap less than the Elite?

The PRO is tighter fitting, but both will flap on descents or at speed. For me the cut of the PRO was not like the other PI sizing, which in my experience is pretty consistent. I use the Elite jacket with detachable sleeves, which I've found very useful.
