Slide into speed.

As we all know, triathlons play by a different set of rules. For example, your apparel can't simply perform well in one discipline, as you'll suffer in your other two legs as a result. This particular scenario has long plagued both triathlon racers and apparel manufacturers. However, with its new Octane Tri Suit, Pearl Izumi has finally solved the comfort equation for all of its variables.

The Octane has been constructed from Izumi's P.R.O. Aero fabric with In-R-Cool, a polyester and elastane blend that provides optimal cooling during maximum efforts. And with its Coldblack treatment, the fabric also provides a UPF-50 level of sun protection by reflecting the sun's UV rays. The fabric surface, like Izumi's cycling speedsuits, is designed to enhance aerodynamics over both the running and cycling legs of the race. In fact, these fabrics were incorporated because of Izumi's inspiration from Tim DeBoom and Argos-Shimano, respectively.

Adding to the Octane's streamlined shape are a welded hem and sleeve openings. These features not only ensure an undisturbed air flow, but they're also smooth against the skin, too. For cycling comfort, Pearl spec'd its TRI quick-dry chamois chamois. This insert provides the necessary level of support for your time in the saddle, however, not so much so that it will effect either your run or swim. Additionally, Izumi created the TRI chamois to quickly dry after T1. This way, you won't be riding or running soggy.

The Octane has a ten-inch front zipper for on-the-fly ventilation, and for a speedy entry and exit of the suit. It also features two easy access envelope pockets in order to store your race nutrition.

The Pearl Izumi Octane Tri Suit is available in four sizes from Small to X-Large and in the colors Atomic Black and Black. For transport to and from the race, Izumi has also included a laundry bag. Please note, that Pearl Izumi does not recommend using the Octane Tri Suit in chlorinated pools.

For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.

Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

Perfect - as long as nothing goes wrong.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought this for my most recent half-ironman.

The good :: I am 170 lbs, 6" tall and a medium fit very well (TIGHT!). The fabric is extremely comfortable and dried within 15 minutes after the swim. The sleeve and pant hem were comfortable and did not ride up, move, etc. Rear pockets were easy to access on the bike and the center front zip was a lifesaver on the run (Vineman gets hot). The chamois was unnoticeable on the ride and run (read, no chaffing). The suit feels fast!!!

BAD :: It is not easy to get on and off. The sleeves make it more difficult then most one-piece suits I have raced in. So, if you consistently have to use the restroom in a race, this is probably not the suit for you.
