Cuffs Too Loose, Otherwise Nice Design

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I was hopeful that the Pearl Izumi Elite Barrier Convertible would be perfect for fall early morning rides here in SoCal where it starts in the low 50s and gets up to about 70 by 8:30. I also do plenty of climbing and the idea of peeling off the sleeves to avoid getting sweaty on the way up, and then zipping them back on on to prevent a chill on the decent, was very appealing.

I am 6 foot 4, 192 lbs, 39 in. chest, 35 in. sleeve. I ordered the large. The torso fit well, the fabric felt nice, and it looked sharp as a vest in black. The tail was a little short (no wheel spray protection for the bum), but the front was the right length for a semi-aggressive riding position. The deal-breaker was with the sleeves, where the cuff was at least 1.5 in. too loose and not adjustable. The only solution to keep out the chill would be a winter glove with a gauntlet to cover the cuff. But that would kill the versatility of the piece, so, unfortunately, I decided it had to be returned.

The sleeves detach as a single piece connected across the shoulders like a cape. Once removed, the upper back mesh vent is exposed, which makes sense for regulating body temperature.

What happened to the sleeves?

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is handily one of the best convertible jackets out there. It breathes perfectly. The fabric is buttery smooth and comfortable. It can be worn in a range from the mid 50's to just above freezing with appropriate layering. But, my biggest problem with this new model is the sizing.

I have an older version of of the Elite Barrier that needed replacing and the sizing has noticeably changed. I'm 6'1, 208lbs, have about a 44-45" chest, and a standard shirt sleeve length of 35. Based on the sizing chart I should go for an XL (which is what my old one was). This didn't work. Everything fits nicely; not a race fit, more relaxed fit. BUT, the sleeves are definitely too long and the cuff too loose. This is a major problem for me. Air flows straight up the cuffs and I get a lot of sleeve flapping. I've tried the L and its sleeves are okay, but it starts to run a more racer fit and tight in the chest. This might be OK for some, but I like some space to allow for layering. I even compared my old and this new one side-by-side and the difference is noticeable by maybe an inch to an inch and a half. One other con, they got rid of the front Napoleon/chest pocket.

So, bottom line for me is, what was a perfect jacket a few years ago, isn't any more and finds me stuck b/w sizes. So, I now need either tolerate some shortcomings, or look for a different brand. Sucks.

Does this jacket have any rear pockets?...

Does this jacket have any rear pockets? If so, what kind of closure do they have?

Responded on

Yes, the jacket has one large mesh back pocket with a vertical zipper on one side; right hand access. The pocket is about 4 inches tall and runs the width of the back.

Good Jacket

I like to stay cool, so this jacket and a short sleeve jersey was great at 45-50 degrees. Seems to cut the wind well and the sleeves come over very easily. I bought a medium it isn't tight, but fits well. I am 5'10, 150 with swimmers build - larger shoulders, no waist.

A must have!

I use this jacket more than any other I own! Jacket converts into a vest has great wind and water protection! If there was an option to give it 6 stars I would!

I like the PI Elite Barrier Convertible Jacket and have a 46 inch chest along with broad shoulders. I ma 6 ft, 210 lbs and fit with 36 inch waist. I need to know what size will fit my build. Not looking for a tight fit. Will typically be wearing this year round but mostly Spring-Fall. Can I layer under this without restrictions?

Responded on

XL will be perfect. This will give you plenty of layering options and not be too tight of a fit.

Is this jacket windPROOF..? I know it won't be waterproof only water resistant. But would like to make sure it works as a wind jacket with windproof panels.

Responded on

Yes. This jacket has a CFM rating of 5. Anything below a 10 is good; the lower the number the better.
