End that ice-cream-headache sensation.

Gearing up for cold-weather riding can be something of a chore, but we've found those quiet stretches of snowy road on a sunny November afternoon to be some of the most rewarding. While simple in stature, the Pearl Izumi Barrier Skull Cap is a crucial piece of gear that protects your exposed head from chilly winds and light moisture.

The Barrier Skull Cap is like Pearl Izumi's Thermal Skull Cap in that its ergonomic fit layers comfortably under your helmet, while wicking away moisture and insulating your head. But the Barrier Cap adds the Pearl Izumi Barrier shell across the front of the cap -- an additional layer of defense from the wind.

Unique to Pearl Izumi's series of unisex skull cap, is the subtle cutout at the back of the cap designed to accommodate a ponytail, or the party end of your mullet. The Barrier Skull Cap comes in Black, or White with red accents. One size should fit most.

How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Natural Waist:
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

Perfection (if the fit is correct)

Pearl Izumi USA is based near Boulder CO and they design great cold-weather gear -including shoe covers, arm & leg warmers, gloves, and cycling jackets.

Application: Winter-weight thermal cap for use in temperatures between 30-50*

Pros: Covers your ears! Great fabric. Great quality. It works.

Fit? I agree with the poster below. This "one size" thermal cap best fits a rider with a small to medium (average) size head. And non-thick/bushy hair appently! I'm 5'10" with medium+ head size (about 58-59cm). This cap stretches and fits me well (just), but if you are a tall/large male and need a size Large medium-weight thermal cap, try the one made by De Marchi (or maybe the one by Craft). Both are excellent. If you need a heavy-weight thermal cap for riding in really cold weather, try the "WS skully cap" by Castelli.

Good for a small head and thin hair

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I consulted with the online chat before buying and explained that I had very thick, bushy hair. She assured me it would fit fine, so I bought it. It came nowhere close to even reaching my ears, much less covering them, and only a fraction of my hair would have fit thru the ponytail part. I returned the item and a large shipping charge was deducted for something I would have never bought if I was given accurate info. It only cost me $2 to ship it back to them. So if you have a very small head and very thin hair, it should work well for you, otherwise not.
