Description

One thing that most of us die-hard winter trainers and commuters can agree to disagree on, is chamois preference in our full-length tights. Some like it with, but some prefer the comfort and familiarity of their summer shorts or bibs. So for the latter crowd, Pearl Izumi aims to please with the Elite AmFib Tight.

Designed soley as a warm and weatherproof bib tight, the AmFib packs all of Pearl's top-shelf fit, wicking, and breathing properties. It is constructed from a blend of Pearl's Elite Softshell and Elite Thermal Fleece fabrics. These fabrics were selected in order to ensure a hand-in-hand system of consistent warming insulation, effective moisture transfer, and protection from wind and water. The Thermal Fleece fabric handles thermo-regulation and wicking, whereas the Softshell material is interspersed in key exposure areas to eliminate element intrusion. The two fabrics coordinate effectively, so much so that Pearl Izumi gives the AmFib tight a thumbs up for winter rides when the mercury dips as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

Pearl Izumi has also left the choice of chamois up to you. By itself, the tight excels at keeping you warm on short commutes, or multi-sport use (off-season Nordic ski training anyone?). For longer rides, the AmFib Tight is ideal when worn in conjunction with your favorite shorts, but that doesn't mean that Pearl skimped on the fit to accommodate. Pearl designed the tights to allow full articulation during cycling. The lower leg also follows a contoured shape that leads to an integrated stirrup and a unique gasket that allows the tight to be worn over a shoe. Not only does this streamline and secure the fit, the design retains an uninterrupted insulation layer that prevents cold air from creeping in above your shoes. Additionally, Pearl added an 8-inch lower leg zipper to aid in putting the tights on, along with 360 degree reflective accents for safer night riding.

The Pearl Izumi Elite AmFib Tight is available in sizes from Small to XX-Large, and in the color Black.

Here's what others have to say...

Very good in cold windy weather!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought these to replace a pair of Sporthill XC windproof pants that were about 13 years old (I tried the new Sporthill XC pants - but the cuffs were loose (I assume to fit over XC ski boots), so no good for cycling). Anyway...
Pros:
- I've ridden in temps as low as 15 deg with 15 - 20 MPH winds. The front side of the pants are windproof as advertised. The back panels are more breathable but I didn't notice any chill when riding down wind. I've ridden in 0 deg F with a medium and heavy base layers and that worked good.
- I am 6' 1", 200 lbs, 34" waist, 32" inseam. I ordered the large size. These fit well. I can get a medium weight + heavy weight layer underneath, and believe I could get one more layer on.
Con:
- Only 1 con - the front windproof fabric narrows a bit at the knees. In higher winds I found my knees getting cold. It would be better if the windproof fabric wrapped about 2/3 around the knee.

These are the bomb.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I wear mine for winter MTB and road riding. Warm down to the wee temps -- single digits.

Really comfortable.

To me, they fit with exactly the same cut/size as other PI Elite bottoms.

Amfib = Amphibious. They are pretty darn water repellent. Fine in rain and snow... a bit like a wetsuit: permeable but warm.
