Preload for the performance of a lifetime

Not all hydration drink mixes are the same, especially when it comes to addressing the specific metabolic and physiological needs of women. Dr. Stacy Sims, Ph.D, the scientist behind Osmo Nutrition has a phrase that every woman should listen to and take to heart. "Women are not small men." Now, to allay any fears that this means women will never train as hard or be as fast as men, she isn't referring to their potential as athletes. Dr. Sims is referring to, specifically, a woman's physiology. She developed Osmo Preload Hydration for women to counteract some of the hormonal effects of these physiological differences even before exercise begins. This helps women obtain and maintain peak performance, no matter what the day of the month is.

For years sports nutrition manufacturers have been treating women as small men. Sure they've reduced calories in drinks, added soy protein, and packaged them in pretty pink boxes, maybe added a bit of calcium. But, there has been no move to reformulate from a science-based standpoint. Sims, an elite athlete and specialist in how hormones affect the body's performance set out to develop a series of hydration and recovery products that directly address the female athlete's needs.

What's the one thing that affects a woman's training more than anything? The menstrual cycle. And while studies have been done on the effects of training on the cycle, for example, causes of amenorrhea, information of the cycle's effect on training have be minimal. Dr. Sims is an expert the in the field of hormones. She describes the hormonal flux as occurring in two phases: During the two weeks when the body is at low hormones, women are physiologically similar to men in both metabolism and carbohydrate uptake. During the two weeks of high hormones, however, there are significant differences. High estrogen forces a woman's body to spare glycogen and increases the amount of fat used for fuel. And while this may sound like a good thing -- who doesn't want to lose a few pounds --if you are racing or doing zone 5 intervals, this can have devastating effects. Additionally, high progesterone delays sweat response and increases core temperature, increases sodium loss and increases muscle breakdown. The combination of these hormones decreases blood plasma volume which can make efforts feel harder than they are. Finally, these two hormones also cause the dreaded bloat

Osmo Nutrition's Preload Hydration for Women is designed to counteract the effects the menstrual cycle has on performance. Yes, the formula is based on the science behind Osmo's Preload Hydration Formula for men, but it is not a shrink and pink version. The original formula cuts right to the core of Osmo's founding hypothesis and namesake — the importance of osmolality and the types of sugars that're used in beverages.

So, what is osmolality? Basically, it's the amount of solutes within a solution, and for the purposes of hydration, we view the blood plasma and the drink itself as solutions. Blood's osmolality sits around 280 to 295 mOsm, while Active Hydration is around 265-270 mOsm. Now, let's get into why this important. Osmo works by looking at how actual physiology works. Around 95% of water absorption occurs at the small intestines. And what facilitates this absorption into the body is a combination of sodium, glucose, and sucrose -- all in small amounts. combining specific sugars and sodiums with water in order to accelerate fluid absorption. But, whereas most industry mixes maintain too high a ratio of sugars to sodium, effectively slowing down absorption, Osmo's proprietary ratio actually accelerates fluid absorption with the three components maintaining a 3.2% solution. Through extensive research, Osmo discovered that fluids that have an osmolality greater than 290 mOsm, and are comprised of fructose, maltodextrin, and sucrose, create a solution that actually inhibits water absorption and hydration potential. As a result of this optimal range, Active Hydration removes the common, unwanted side effects found in typical hydration mixes. That's right, we're talking about the sloshing, bloating, and other gastrointestinal distresses that arise from not being able to properly absorb fluid.

Using the basis of the original formula, in the formula for women, Sims has optimized the ration of glucose to sucrose plus added greater sodium which helps offset decreased plasma volume. When the body temperature increases during the menstrual cycle, muscles are compromised as the body must work to keep the core temperature down rather than maximizing muscle efficiency. The proprietary Osmo formula works to offset this fatigue so that you perform your best no matter what day of the month it is.

Osmo Preload Hydration is meant as a hyper-hydrator for women before intense efforts, ultra-endurance events, or exercise on hot conditions. It is designed to be used in conjunction with body weight, so read the directions before scooping yourself a bottle.

Not only does Preload Hydration bolster your output, but it's also comprised of high-quality, natural, and organic ingredients. So, not only are you assured that what you're drinking is healthy, but more importantly, you won't experience the flavor fatigue that's all-too-common with the majority of hydration mixes. This means that every sip from the bottle will feel new, tasteful, and refreshing.

The Osmo Nutrition Preload Hydration for Women is available in a 20, eight ounce serving tub in the Pineapple Margarita.
