But, whereas most industry mixes maintain too high a ratio of sugars to sodium, effectively slowing down absorption, Osmo's proprietary ratio actually accelerates fluid absorption with the three components maintaining a 3.2% solution. Through extensive research, Osmo discovered that fluids that have an osmolality greater than 290 mOsm, and are comprised of fructose, maltodextrin, and sucrose, create a solution that actually inhibits water absorption and hydration potential. As a result of this optimal range, Active Hydration removes the common, unwanted side effects found in typical hydration mixes. That's right, we're talking about the sloshing, bloating, and other gastrointestinal distresses that arise from not being able to properly absorb fluid.

Now, if you feel like your current hydration mix is effective, we're going to drop some knowledge on you. The body works on a system of checks and balances, with one of the most vital being the fluctuation of body temperature. This shift in temperature is the result of the heat output from working muscles, and to keep you from boiling from the inside out, the body regulates your core temperature by moving blood plasma to the skin. From there, heat is offloaded through the process of vasodilation (the dilation of blood vessels that decreases blood pressure) and evaporative cooling -- better known as sweating. Now, while this preventative system is highly effective, it's completely dependent on your ability to continually replenish the body with the water needed for plasma volume and perspiration. This should be putting the aforementioned in perspective. When your mix's osmolality is blocking water absorption, your body starts to shut down on itself and overheat. I love this stuff, period. I use the packets for all day rides where refills are a necessity and the scoop container for cold winter rides or shorter summer rides when I know I won't have to refill.
