You're not bonking, you're dehydrated.

At this point, you've probably heard the hype surrounding Osmo Nutrition, and perhaps you've even rolled your eyes at the prospect of yet another sports hydration mix. However, if you've done the latter, you're about to learn why the Osmo Nutrition Active Hydration Singles are a revolution to sports hydration.

To fully comprehend the power of Osmo Active Hydration, we need to dispel the haze surrounding the current hydration ideology. Essentially, you'll find that most sports hydration mixes feature a high carbohydrate level, with the prevailing intention of having you drink your calories during exercise. However, as Osmo's peer-reviewed and empirically-proven testing shows, this is not only incorrect and ineffective, but it's actually minimizing your power output and effectively dehydrating you. This assertion cuts right to the core of Osmo's founding hypothesis and namesake -- the importance of osmolality and the types of sugars used in a beverage.

So, what is osmolality? Basically, it's the amount of solutes within a solution, and for the purposes of hydration, we view the blood plasma and the drink itself as solutions. Blood's osmolality sits around 280 to 295 mOsm, while Active Hydration is around 265-270 mOsm. Now, let's get into why this important. Osmo works by looking at how actual physiology works. Around 95% of water absorption occurs at the small intestines. And what facilitates this absorption into the body is a combination of sodium, glucose, and sucrose -- all in small amounts. combining specific sugars and sodiums with water in order to accelerate fluid absorption. But, whereas most industry mixes maintain too high a ratio of sugars to sodium, effectively slowing down absorption, Osmo's proprietary ratio actually accelerates fluid absorption with the three components maintaining a 3.2% solution. Through extensive research, Osmo discovered that fluids that have an osmolality greater than 290 mOsm, and are comprised of fructose, maltodextrin, and sucrose, create a solution that actually inhibits water absorption and hydration potential. As a result of this optimal range, Active Hydration removes the common, unwanted side effects found in typical hydration mixes. That's right, we're talking about the sloshing, bloating, and other gastrointestinal distresses that arise from not being able to properly absorb fluid.

Now, if you feel like your current hydration mix is effective, we're going to drop some knowledge on you. The body works on a system of checks and balances, with one of the most vital being the fluctuation of body temperature. This shift in temperature is the result of the heat output from working muscles, and to keep you from boiling from the inside out, the body regulates your core temperature by moving blood plasma to the skin. From there, heat is offloaded through the process of vasodilation (the dilation of blood vessels that decreases blood pressure) and evaporative cooling -- better known as sweating. Now, while this preventative system is highly effective, it's completely dependent on your ability to continually replenish the body with the water needed for plasma volume and perspiration. This should be putting the aforementioned in perspective. When your mix's osmolality is blocking water absorption, your body starts to shut down on itself and overheat. And not surprisingly, many blame this feeling of 'bonking' on a lack of caloric intake instead of properly placing the blame on dehydration. This where the founding Osmo ethos reigns true -- you're not bonking, you're dehydrated.

Interestingly enough, many don't recognize the effects of dehydration, and this is due to a problematic side effect called cardiac drift. This is where the heart rate remains high, but power output drops off dramatically. So, if you're only in-tune with your HRM readings, you'll feel a natural level of exertion while your power is actually decreasing. By optimizing fluid intake and hydration, the Active Hydration formula increases thermo-regulation of your core temperature, reduces cramping, and actually increases your power output. We understand that this sounds too good to be true, so we'll provide an explanation on how this occurs.

We mentioned earlier the importance of Active's sugar-to-sodium ratio and how it works with the body's natural physiology in order to maximize water absorption. However, what we didn't say is how difficult this was to achieve. Osmo was forced to be highly selective in its ingredients, and accordingly, its sugar value is the result of a proprietary ratio of glucose to sucrose. Additionally, Active makes use of sodium citrate over plain ol' salt. Sodium citrate does two things. First, the sodium works with water in order to enhance water absorption. Secondly, the citrate works in aerobic metabolism to keep the krebs cycling bolstered while its total sodium level also balances Active's electrolyte profile -- a vital component commonly depleted through sweating. Through this balance, Active staves off cramping and promotes cellular respiration, or aerobic metabolism. So, with extra circulating citrate, there's more essential substance available for enzyme activity, and thus, there's a greater cofactor available to keep aerobic metabolism high and effective. This means that your cells are uninhibited in their ability to convert nutrients into biochemical energy, and eventually, release them into waste.

As a result, the body functions in harmony and your core temperature is regulated. This is of the highest importance in regards to race results. You see, once your body temperature rises above 102 degrees Fahrenheit, the body's systems start to become compromised. Accordingly, once you get your first inkling of thirst, you're already experiencing a 2% total body water loss, which in more applicable terms, translates directly to around an 11% decrease in top end power. However, with all of the aforementioned benefits of Active's sugar ratios, sodium profile, and dialed-in osmolality, testing has actually proven that you can expect an increased power output of anywhere from 2 to 20%. In fact, a recent test showed an average differential of around 38 watts when compared to high-carb sports mix. Think about that, Active provides nearly twice the watt conservation than the most aerodynamic wheels on earth.

Not only does Active Hydration bolster your output, but it's also comprised of high-quality, natural, and organic ingredients. So, not only are you assured that what you're drinking is healthy, but more importantly, you won't experience the flavor fatigue that's all-too-common with the majority of hydration mixes. This means that every sip from the bottle will feel new, tasteful, and refreshing.
