If you're putting in the miles, you'll need a bike that's lightweight, comfortable, and most importantly, reliable. Luckily, the Orbea Aqua TPX Complete Road Bike checks off all of those boxes. So, whether you're dabbling in racing, or just riding for fitness and fun, you'll find that the Aqua's responsive aluminum frame and SRAM drivetrain are up to the task.

Sure, carbon fiber may be the frame material du jour of choice, but experience tells us that a well-built aluminum frame also provides an excellent ride quality. Orbea knows this, and accordingly, it built the Aqua out of 7005 aluminum alloy for its blend of light weight and durability. After the material selection, Orbea then went to great lengths to build-in comfort without sacrificing aluminum's natural rigidity. Along these lines, the seatstays and top tube have been hydroformed, which enables them to flex slightly more than a round tube. Adding to this design ideology is the same carbon fiber fork that's used on the Orca Bronze.

The fork's carbon fiber construction removes much of the vibration and bite that's associated with aluminum, while also increasing the stiffness and responsiveness of the Aqua's front triangle. in other words, the combination of the hydroformed tubes and carbon fork means that there's plenty of compliance to keep you comfortable on long rides. And since stiffness is key, the custom-formed down tube and large diameter chainstays resist flex under hard efforts. That means that none of your energy is wasted when it's time to ride out of the saddle. And, in terms of stability, the relaxed angles of the Aqua's frame bolster its handling at speed.

SRAM gets the nod for the drivetrain with its Apex group set. And while it may lack the titanium and carbon fiber bits that make SRAM's Red and Force components so drool-worthy, Apex sees technological trickle-down that results in crisp, precise shifting. The same DoubleTap shift actuation used in the Red shifters makes the Apex shifters instinctive to use. There's also a compact crankset and an 11-32t cassette to take the sting out of the steepest of climbs. And when you get to top, Orbea's house-brand brakes will keep you in control for the ride down.

The remainder of the build kit consists primarily of Orbea items, such as the handlebar, stem, and seatpost. The wheelset is another Orbea item with 32 spokes, which keeps the weight down, while still providing the strength and stiffness that you need. Vittoria's Zaffiro tires grip the road, and are hard-wearing for logging the miles. And lastly, the Selle Italia X1 Flow saddle provides a comfortable perch, no matter where the ride takes you.

The Orbea Aqua TPX Complete Road Bike is available in the color White/grey and in five sizes from 48 to 60cm.

Great Bike

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I use a MTB for daily commuter and bought this bike for longer rides. After unpacking and assembling the bike, I found that everything was already perfectly adjusted and ready to roll. I was very impressed with the quality of this bike. I had never used SRAM shifters but found them to be very fast and smooth. I am very pleased with this bike and would gladly recommend it as a excellent entry level road bike.

Love it!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I've used to ride Mountain Bikes, and now I bought this bike thinking only on my commute to work, but once I ride it, I feel the speed the light weight and the amazing good looking, so now I'm planning to start training on it. Totally recommended. Also Great Price for an AWESOME bike!! ;)

Comfortable & fast!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I have been racing MTB & cyclocross, I bought this one just for leisure & long distance riding with friends. This bike surprises me a lot with it's speed and comfort. I will be using this for NJ Gran Fondo this September 2014.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought this bike for general fitness and daily exercise and because it won't beat me half to death on the rough streets of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast towns in which I ride (unlike my older Orca). I have yet to find anything I dislike about it and it is absolutely a joy to ride, it's not twitchy, and handles predictably. I don't find the aluminum frame heavy, bulky, cumbersome, etc. I actually enjoy riding far more than I liked my 2006 Trek Pilot 6.2. This is my first SRAM equipped bike and I have gotten the hang of it after a few rides; I used to insist on Ultegra or better, but I'm sticking with SRAM. Oh, did I mention I'm a woman? I did NOT buy the Dama version of this bike as I found it just all-around too small and the geometry didn't work for me. I am 5 ft 8 and 135 lbs and fairly long-legged. I bought a size 54 cm. Unlike the American-built steeds, the handlebars and hoods aren't massively wide and the top tube has a more graceful angle. I swapped the Selle Italia X1 for my old Selle Italia Lady Gel Flow, added a CatEye computer and may swap the Vittorios for GatorSkins, but so far the Vittorios have been great despite all the debris in our bike lanes here in the South. (Bike lanes are something of an afterthought here and a place to throw beer cans :/) As mentioned above, the fork is amazing and soaks up some of the nasty bumps and tracking is superior. I have the 2013 model.

Great bike frame!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am writing about this bike frame and geometry and not the componetry because I have a 2011 model with full 105 components. The frame is very stiff for heavier folks and the hydro pulled frames as told to me by my LBS makes the frames alot more desirable. Okay, was he handing me a cup of bull.............really don't think so. I weigh in at 195 but started on this bike at almost 210 and the bike has performed flawlessly. No stress on the weld joints which are almost seamless with the excellent paint job put on this model that it looks like a bike that should be more. The geometry has proven very good for me and my specs. The front wheel does not come off the ground and extreme grade climbs like some bikes I have had in the past. It hugs to the road where it should. Tracking on downhills and in curves has been great too. My only complaint would be the cheap derailleur hanger they use which is like a pot metal rather than a solid stamped piece. Mine was slightly bent and he mech at my LBS was able to straighten it out but suggested for next season replacing with a stamped hanger for piece of mind. The bike's front fork soaks up the bunmps and continues to track straight even on rough roads. For the money a person would be hard pressed to find a better entry bike or even an upgrade from a subpar bike for road riding. The lines are great and Orbea has done a great job with the Aqua.

Great bike frame!
