Description

Technology to the extreme.

Northwave designed Extreme Tech Cycling Shoes to give you serious pedal power when you need to get out front in a hurry. On top of being some of the lightest shoes on the market, Extreme Tech Mountain Shoes boast an incredibly thin carbon fiber soleplate for instant power transfer, the Speed Lace Winch closure System, and a design program that rivals the research programs at NASA.

Northwave built the upper from a single shell of ultralight microfiber to eliminate stitching for the lightest possible weight, the best fit and feel, and virtually no hot spots or chafing. The ventilated carbon fiber soleplate is thin and boasts a weight of just 60 grams. Despite this light weight, Northwave didn’t forget how rough it can get out there. Thermo-welded polyurethane reinforcements at the toe and the sides of the uppers protect your feet from stones, branches, and other trail debris.

Northwave used BioMap (Biomechanical Mapping) analysis to design the Extreme Tech Cycling Shoe. Athletes are tested extensively to help Northwave design products that work in perfect synergy with the body’s systems. This testing ensures optimal fit, comfort, and performance. Biomap testing contributes to every design aspect of the shoes, including cut design and material selection. What all this means is shoes that work with your body to optimize performance.

The S.B.S. (Step By Step) ratcheting system provides stable closure that won’t come undone or loosen while you ride. It allows you to dial in a precise fit so you can maximize pedaling efficiency without having to deal with hot spots and blisters. Extreme Tech shoes also incorporate Northwave’s proprietary Speed Lace Winch System, which allows you to adjust the fit of your shoe while you’re on the bike so you can easily accommodate any swelling that might occur on longer rides.

The carbon fiber soleplate is much lighter than other, less costly sole materials. It also allows Northwave to reduce sole thickness for direct power transfer from your foot to the pedal. Ventilation is taken care of by vents at the toe and on the sides of the shoes. The Extreme Air footbed allows air to move under your feet for complete circulation. The Extreme Air footbed is also anallergenic and antibacterial to minimize odors.

Northwave Extreme Tech Shoes come in White/black, and Orange/green. They are available in whole sizes 39 to 48 and half sizes 39.5 to 45.5.

  • Speedlight 3D Carbon sole with rubber lugs is supper-lightweight, ultra-stiff, and offers plenty of off-the-bike traction
  • Biomap upper ergonomically wraps your foot without stitching to avoid any hot spots or irritation
  • S.B.S. ratchet and Speed Lace winch closures provide even distribution for a snug, uninhibited fit
  • Thermowelded reinforcement offers protection from impacts and ensures durability
  • Arch support features large vents for optimum cooling

Love Um

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I needed a basic cross country style shoe and was looking for something with a high end feel, but at a mid level price. The Northwave Extreme Tech fit the bill perfectly.

Carbon sole feels every bit as stiff and light as more expensive options from other brands. Speed Lace Winch system as a secure fit that's easy to adjust on the fly. Back of the heel has a bit of texture to it which helps to keep your heel in place without rubbing your heels raw. Overall great balance of comfort, performance and functionality and thus far the durability has been on par.

For sizing, please follow our sizing chart. I know the sizing may look off, but for me a 42 fits like a 43-44 in most other brands. Narrow fit for Northwave, but still not nearly as narrow as Fizik.

I am a 10.5 shoe size, wear a Shimano 45.5 MTB shoe and 46 in a Louis Garneau road shoe. None of the sizes line so I am a little confused on which size to order. Any input? Thanx

11 is a size 44 in Northwave and I would recomend going with this size. This is a great shoe, especially for the money. If you have any additional questions on Northwave shoes, please feel free to email me at dmyers@backcountry.com

Meh.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large

I was excited to get this pair of shoes, as I have a road version of the same shoe. However, the road shoe has a three strap closing system. This shoe, while stiff in the sole is uncomfortable for my feet. The forefoot closure puts pressure on the side of my foot when I ride, even leaving a bruise on longer rides. I have a fairly normal size foot, and I typically wear Sidi's. Overall an attractive and stiff shoe, but very uncomfortable.

good shoe

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I think most of the Northwave shoes run wide but these are better for people with narrow feet. My only complaint is the buckle and strap getting jammed when tightened all the way...Not sure if its just my pair or that happens to other pairs.

good shoe

Kelsey, I agree with you on the S.B.S. Ratcheting system. They stay put went locked in but your have be mindful when channeling the ratchet through the grooves when tightening them down. I thought I was a Sidi guy for years (and they are an outstanding product as well) , then I happened to pick up a pair of Stykers on sale. Can't go back now! I'm a northwave guy now!

How should women size down in this shoe?

How should women size down in this shoe?

In general whatever size you wear in womens for shoes, subtract two, and that will leave you with the size you most likely will wear in mens. Example: you wear a size 10 womens, that would translate to a size 8 in mens.

You might be better off looking at a women specific shoe though, as generally mens and womens feet are not really shaped the same... just a suggestion.

Great shoe and Solid Carbon Sole

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

One of the few shows that is adjustable enough to fit narrow foot athough I always size down slightly for that purpose.
Speed Lace works well to tighten as much as you want
Carbon base is solid with very little flex.
Probably one of the best , if not best SPD shoes I have purchased over the years.
Keeping this for ROAD Bike only as it is too nice for the Mud!

Perfect race shoe

Perfect race shoe

These shoes are awesome if you are looking for a light race shoe. They do run a little wide so be aware if you have narrow feet like me. My custom insole fits right in making it a great fit
