Along with a ton of ventilation, the Evolution S.B.S. Shoe features Northwave’s exclusive fit, performance, and comfort enhancing technologies -- including a wood insole. Wood's natural vibration-damping qualities reduce fatigue from muscles being rattled for hours in the saddle. It’s this kind of innovative thinking that has propelled Northwave to the top of the cyling shoe food chain, and is likely to keep it there for quite a while.

The Wood Lasting Insole is made with bonded layers of wood, and the thermoformed wooden arch provides support and a natural feel. Under this exclusive insole is a carbon fiber soleplate that's much lighter than other, less costly sole materials. It also allows Northwave to reduce sole thickness for direct power transfer from your foot to the pedal.

For the best fit, Northwave uses a unique biomechanical (BioMap) mapping analysis to design its products. Athletes are tested extensively to help design gear that works in perfect synergy with the body’s systems. This testing ensures optimal fit, comfort, and performance. BioMap testing contributes to every design aspect of the shoes, including cut design, seam positioning, and material selection.

The Evolution's S.B.S. (Step By Step) ratcheting system provides stable closure that won’t come undone or loosen up while you ride. It allows you to dial in a precise fit so you can maximize pedaling efficiency without having to deal with hot spots and blisters. Also contributing to this is the Tenso Strap system, which lets you make fast, precise adjustments to the fit of the shoe while you’re on the bike.

Northwave ensures proper strap alignment by using an over-injected material on the sides of the Tenso strap to guide them into place. With fit and comfort dialed, the last thing essential to cycling shoes is ventilation.

Northwave’s advanced Aerator ventilation system aims to prevent overheating even on the hottest rides. Large mesh vents on the toe and the sides of the shoe allow cool air to enter while hot air passes out through the Omega heel. The ventilated Performance Pro footbed allows air to flow all around your foot to keep it cool and dry during a ride, and the breathable microfiber upper lets your foot regulate its temperature naturally.

The Northwave Evolution S.B.S. Shoes are available in White/Black, Lime/Blue, and Black/Silver. They are available in whole sizes 39 to 48 and half sizes 39.5 to 45.5.

Excellent! Watch sizing!

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

These look great and feel great! Build quality seems EXCELLENT! Ventilation is great and the sole is stiff.

Northwave uses great materials throughout, specifically the material at the heel, which does a great job of keeping your heel from slipping out of the shoe.

I REALLY like the micro adjustments on the ratcheting system!

One Caveat...order a size up. Especially if you have wider feet.

Do they work with Shimano PD-R540 SPD-SL Road Pedals?

Yes, these shoes will work with any 3 hole style cleats.

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit:True to size

The shoes fit like my old Shamanos - good for a wider foot. Not light like an S Works shoe, but very stiff and comfy. They breath wonderfully! They have gotten wet several times and I have experienced no issues with the wood insole. I would buy Northwave again, hands down.

Would you be able to tell me if the toe...

Would you be able to tell me if the toe box on these is wider than the ones in the extreme and extreme tech series?

The toe box in each of those will be the same or extremely close to the same, so fitment will be comparable. The difference between the two is the closure system and the construction materials.

Fantastic Shoe; Watch Size

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

Thanks to previous reviewers for warning about the inaccurate sizing chart. If I had followed it, then I would have ordered shoes that were too short. My old shoes were Shimano size 47. They were the right length for me but too narrow in the toe box, causing me terrible hot spot problems on long rides. That's why I decided to try Northwave. I got these in size 47 and they are perfect: exact same length as the Shimanos but wider in the toe box. Goodbye hot spots! (I wear US size 12 1/2 - 13 shoes).

I love the ratcheting and ankle adjustment systems. The ratcheting is fine-grained, easy to adjust while riding and I am able to lock in exactly the foot position I want, which, combined with the stiff sole, gives me excellent power transfer: everything my legs can do gets to the pedals! Yet these are very comfortable (for me at least) and I can loosen the velcro straps for room to wiggle my foot around inside, to ease discomfort on long rides. That's a big plus for me because I am mainly a distance / endurance rider.

I can't speak to durability as I only have 120 miles on these. They seem very well made.

Great shoe, Use EU sizing!

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I just picked up a pair of these and they fit like a dream! Be sure to use your EU size and not US as their chart is wrong. I replaced last years Shimano R087's and I'm so glad I pulled the trigger. I haven't done any long rides yet due to weather, only rollers, but even that was an eye opening experience compared to my previous shoes.

The venting is far more than I had expected, the upper mesh (whole shoe) is nearly see through. The build quality is top notch and I can't wait to get out on my bike this season and rack up the miles with these.

I got these on a great deal at $104 w/ shipping so if you're looking at getting a new shoe these are a no brainer right now. DO IT!! Just be sure you know your EU size and don't use their conversion chart.

Planning to get one... Can u measure in inches the insole of size 44? I have a sparta sbs pair in 43.5, the fit is perfect. Can you compre them if the size of the sole inside is the same? Thanks

A Tight Fit!

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it

I am a big fan of Northwave shoes. They fit my feet just right. I have bought quite a few pair, always size 42 (everything from sandals to MTB shoes, touring shoes, and road shoes). Reading the other reviews, I was a bit concerned about the fit of these Evolution shoes, so I inquired before ordering. I was advised to order the same size I usually wear in Northwave. The shoes did not fit and I had to return them. I needed to go up to 42.5, but none available in black. Crud! They are nice shoes! Order up 1/2 size!

Fit is not like other NW shoes

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it
  • Fit:Runs small

I have the Aerlite model in a 45. good shoe but wanted a bit more room, so I ordered a 45.5 of the Evolution. Well it fits SMALLER than the 45 Aerlite. WTH? Personally I can't understand how a shoe maker can be that inconsistent. I was really bummed. There was no 46 available in the white at the time :-(

And of course Northwave's size converter is crazy inaccurate. Says that I'm like a 12-12.5 for wearing a 45. Wrong. I'm 10.5, maybe 11 max.

Good shoes,but terrible size

  • Fit:Runs small

They are very nice but the US size is not correct,so I bought a small shoes.

Ps.I think the EU size should be right.

EU size is wrong too, I've had 2 pair of 44.5 s-works and this shoe the 44.5 is way too tight.

Great Shoe

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Great snug fit and is remarkably comfortable with how stiff the shoe is. Maybe a little heavier than other shoes with this price point.

  • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I didn't know this level of comfort existed in a cycling shoe and I now look at my Shimano's in disgust. This shoe is extremely stiff, well ventilated and the heel cup and SBS strap keep you locked in solid. There is a little more room in the toe box compared to the Shimano shoes I've owned but nothing obnoxious. I wear a US10 and ordered a 44.5 and they fit like a glove.

Beware: The size conversion is wrong

  • Familiarity:I returned this product before using it

I wear a US size 10 so I ordered according to the conversion size chart a EU size 42.5. When I tried the shoe on it was way too small. I called and then ordered a EU 43 and 43.5 just to be sure. Even the 43.5 was too small so I talked to Kyle at Competitive who was very helpful and he said that he wore the same size shoe and that I would need a size 44.5. Wow! According to the size table that would be a US size 11 1/2. So before you order this shoe or the Northwave brand make sure you talk to someone who has your same size foot so that you can verify it will be a perfect fit. This was a very annoying process and literally took a few weeks to sort through so don't be mislead and do your due diligence up front! I can't comment on the shoe but will do so once I have the right size and can get out on the road to put them to the test.
