Good Winter Shoes, Kind of Waterproof.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The sizing is big, I ride a 44 Sidi and a 43 Northwave, with room to spare. The fleece inside is really nice and comfortable. The pull lace system and velcro cover works well. As far as rainproof, they do the job if you are wearing rain pants. I have ridden them without rain pants in heavy rain and all they do is fill with water through the neoprene top. With rain pants covering the top they work really well. Northwave says they are not truly waterproof and they are honest. For winter I commute 30km/day round trip to work in Oslo, Norway. Temperatures are regularly in the single digits Fahrenheit. With good wool socks they do well on the commute. Longer rides over 1.5 hours at the lower temps leaves my toes a bit cold. Apart from going to 45Nrth boots these are about as good as winter boots get. I love to wear these in muddy offroad conditions into the 50's. These shoes have transformed my ability to keep riding through the winter. This is my second winter in Norway with these shoes and I am still happy.

How waterproof are these? My commute is 2 hours every day and it rains quite a bit here in Seattle. Thanks.

Gore Tex membranes have a "Guaranteed to Keep You Dry Promise" promising the membrane to be completely waterproof. I would bet if paired with a good rain pant or rain cover over the top opening you feet should stay pretty dry.

will these work with Sidi shoes and speedplay road or speedplay frog?

Responded on

These are a complete shoe, not a cover, so they won't work with SIDI shoes. The two hole cleat pattern will accommodate SpeedPlay Frog cleats, but will not work with 4 hole SpeedPlay road cleats.

Dogs of Cold

Short review/alert. I've yet to ride in these. The size chart is about a half size small (they say 41.5=9US) They fit my 8.5D feet slightly snug with a winter sock. The boa lace system and velcro neoprene cuff are far superior to the Sidi GTX cuff and velcro system

Comfy and almost toasty warm

I normally have a problem with all my toes falling asleep and getting numb when its even a little bit cold out. And I dislike getting sealskins on and off. These are pretty darn good ... I still have numb little toes but its warmer than my summer shoes with sealskins, and much more comfortable. The soles are nice and stiff, with very little flex or slop given the level of comfort. Maybe the Sidi's are better? I'd have to spend twice as much to find out.
