Seriously awesome road light

There are two independently owned companies in the USA that specialize in cycling lighting. They are NiteRider and Light & Motion. They're both great companies.

Both make cycling-specific, high-quality lights; "designed, assembled, and serviced" in the USA. Bravo to both. Personally, I have a slight preference for NiteRider (depending upon the light) because I prefer their mount system (two options btw) and better warranty (lifetime vs. 2 year). But they both make great lights

    Pros of the NR 950:
    -Great light, compact, high quality.
    -Quality construction and switch.
-Quality aluminum alloy housing, finned for thermal venting.
-Light detaches from the mount (unlike L&M).
-Two bar mount options (unlike L&M); both strap-on and clamp-on.
-Water-resistant rated for riding in the rain.
-No external wires flopping around. Or heavy external battery.
-800 lumens for serious roadies is awesome! Useful for descending in the dark or extremely dark backcountry roads. But 400 lumens is plenty for the road in most circumstances.
    -Lifetime defect warranty.
    -Very good value.

-Battery life is adequate but not awesome. 1.5 hours for 800 lumens. 3 hours for 400 lumens. But it's the same over at L & M.

Note 1: 950/800 lumens is *a lot* of light for the road. In fact, blinding to oncoming vehicles. Be careful.

Note 2: NiteRider also offer a detachable "clamp on" mount for $10 (from their website) if you prefer that system. That's awesome.

Great As Helmet or Handlebar Light

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I primarily bought this light as a helmet mounted light to give additional lighting as I scanned ahead on night mtb rides. Charging was easy and quick and the multiple burn modes allowed to keep the charge steady. I would definitely use this as a handlebar mount for the road, as the bar mount is very secure.

    Powerful beam

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

The light is super bright. Casts the beam far and pretty wide. The bar mount seems secure. Havent done anything downhill with it yet to really test it. Really happy with it!

Used it a few times so far and love it!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Picked this up last week and have used it for a road ride and a MTB ride. The installation to handlebars is easy, maybe not as easy as installation of Light and Motion's lights, but I think the way the strap feeds through this light's mount is more secure since it wraps around and feeds up and through the mounting bracket. This may require an extra 30 seconds of fiddling to get it strapped to your bars, but you'll be glad you did when your light stays fixed in place as you barrel around a dark turn on the neighborhood trails.

I haven't tried the helmet mount since it doesn't come with it, but my current setup with a 250 lumen helmet-mounted light and this guy on my handlebars makes nighttime riding much safer, particularly on single track. If this were my only light, I would definitely prefer mounting it to my helmet, instead of on my handlebars, that way I see where I look, rather than only seeing where my handlebars are facing.

The weight is about 50 grams heavier than comparable Light and Motion models, but again, I think the protective casing on this light is more robust and having a burlier case when mountain biking will protect the light more effectively if you do happen to take a tumble.

The boost effect on this is also really handy because no matter where I am on the lighting cycle, I can hit the button twice and crank out 950 lumens in an instant.

    Nite Rider 950 Lumens

This light is sweet!! So small, so BRIGHT, so strong and easy to use. The light fits in the palm of your hand, it's brighter than my brother's light that has a huge battery pack and you can turn it on while riding with the easy button on top. The mount can stay on the bike and then just slide the light on and off when not using or charging. The mount is also simple yet bomber, the rubber eliminates any jiggling and can be super tight. The shipping was awesome too! I ordered it at 10pm and got the package the next day!
