Born from efficiency in speed.

When 29-inch-wheeled mountain bikes first rolled onto the scene, they were generally seen as pretty niche, and they weren't widely embraced, but for one sect of the tribe: single-speeders. Yes, these reverse-evolutionaries realized, as they reduced their drivetrains to rock-like simplicity, they found themselves needing to harvest every joule of momentum over the trail, and 29ers' greater rotational mass did exactly this while also providing obstacle smoothing approach and departure angles that 26-inch wheels couldn't touch. Niner quickly jumped on this logic and brewed up the fantastic One 9 RDO frameset, intended for singlespeed use, but just as lethal as a geared bike, such as this 2015 Niner One 9 RDO 4-Star X1 Complete Mountain Bike.

Frame first, though. The One 9 RDO benefits from all of the weight-saving measures that have made all of Niner's "Race-Day Optimized" frames so revered. At the core of every RDO model is extensive computer-based finite element analysis, used to develop a high-modulus carbon fiber structure with optimized weaves, layups, and tube shapes — ultimately producing the lightest Niner frame to date. The RDO’s fluid form is no accident, and it's designed to minimize chatter and guide impact forces to the strongest parts of the frame. Chain torque goes directly to the rear wheel via the oversized CYA bottom bracket shell and shapely chainstays, yet trail vibrations are quelled by the swooping seatstays. Niner ties the bottom bracket to the precision-enhancing tapered head tube via a large down tube to ensure the frame tracks true and responds to every input.

What separates the ONE 9 RDO from its AIR 9 brother is the use of Niner’s CYA bottom bracket interface. It’s oversized to make room for the included BioCentric eccentric bottom bracket. Unlike other EBBs, BioCentric has a track record of being easy to use and remaining creak-free, but the real benefit is that it allows for the use of a fixed rear dropout. On top of being the lightest option, it avoids the slippage that can occur with some sliding dropouts, and it’s worlds easier to use in the heat of a race than horizontal dropouts. And should you change your mind at some point and want to run gears, you can swap the bottom bracket to Niner’s fixed-position CYA insert, add a derailleur hanger, and run any of the one-by drivetrains on the market.

With the competitive focus of a frame like the One 9 RDO, it only makes sense to build it with components that perform at the highest level. With the 4-Star build, you get exactly that. The SRAM X01 11-speed drivetrain builds on the foundation of the top-shelf XX1 version. X01 features the same 10-42t XD cassette for a massive gear range with a single chainring up front. You'll enjoy flawless shifts and chain retention with the clutch derailleur and alternating narrow-wide tooth profile on the chainring. Stopping duties are handled by Shimano's XT M785s grabbing Shimano Ice Tech rotors for one of the most consistent, controllable, and reliable stopping packages around. Suspension duties are handled by a FOX Racing Shox 32 FLOAT FIT CTD fork with Kashima stanchion-smoothing coating and 100mm of travel. The fork's sealed damper provides consistent control on long descents, and the tapered steerer tube and 15mm QR thru-axle keep you on your line. Meanwhile, Niner selected Stan's NoTubes Arch EXs for the wheels. Why? Because they're light, strong, and wide enough to support today's larger tires, like the Schwalbe rubber that's included. Rounding out the build are Niner's own alloy handlebar, alloy stem, and carbon seatpost — stiff, solid, comfortable, and light parts that are popular on their own, as well.

The 2015 Niner One 9 RDO 4-Star Complete Mountain Bike comes four sizes, from Small to X-Large, and in the colors Atomic Blue and Blaze Yellow. Pedals are not included.
