Item: SHI238      Weight: 197.0g
$189.99

Shimano demonstrates their ability to re-imagine components with their redesign of the XTR rear derailleur. The minimalist design outer X plate both works functionally as a lighter (less metal) and stronger (wider cage twists less), better shifting derailleur, but aesthetically as a branded part where the function is integral to the fashion.

This is the Low Normal version of the derailleur. Shimano believes this will appeal to cross-country riders who do lots of climbing. Having the spring work in reverse—pushing the chain toward the lowest gear, or largest cog--makes the shifts onto the larger cogs easier and faster. Good for those who sometimes unship their chain panic-shifting when grinding up steep hills.

The RD-M970 XTR rear derailleur

operates with the Low Normal spring system. This is the reverse of most derailleurs, which Shimano calls Top Normal. The RD-M970 works with either Shimano DCL or RFP. There are two sizes, the short cage (GS) and long cage (SGS) The maximum cog size one can use is 34t, the minimum is 11t. The maximum front difference is 22t. The GS has a 33t total capacity while the SGS has a 43t total capacity. The pulleys have sealed bearings. 197g (GS)/199g (SGS). MSRP $189.99.
