Shimano is focused on premium performance, and as such, they are still innovating. The Shimano XTR HB-M978 15QR Centerlock Front Hub introduces a new standard -- 15QR. 15QR brings the thru axle stiffness to cross country bikes. The 2009 Fox 15QR forks tout a 25% increase in transverse shear stiffness, and 15% increase in torsional stiffness, at no weight penalty. 15QR has been well thought out in the ease-of-use department as well -- 15QR is as easy, or easier to remove the wheel -- simply flip the lever down, spin it a few times, and pull it out. Reverse the process to install. A small detail (but terrific one) is that Shimano engineered an adjustable set nut that allows you to set your quick release in your desired position every time. You set this once, and the deed is done. If you like your lever up (12 o'clock position) in front of the fork leg -- it'll be there every time. If you like it pointing back (3 o'clock position) in an "aero" fashion, it'll be there every time. You decide. You set it. You forget it.
The Shimano XTR HB-M978 15QR Centerlock Front Hub comes with drilled for 32 spokes. It accepts an axle diameter of 15mm, designed to be compatible with the 15QR standard used by Fox and Marzocchi. The over locknut distance is 100mm. The hub shell is made of aluminum and the finish is anodized. The bearings run on super polished cups and cone races. There are double contact seals keeping out the outside. We're told availability will be slim at the outset. So, for the purpose of making this available for presale, the weight has been estimated at 219g. MSRP $179.99.
