Style. We'd all prefer more rather than less. Even if we don't admit it, we'd prefer a part that has something to distinguish itself from others, even if the part isn't particularly important. Shimano addressed this concern with their new Deore XT FD-M771 traditional front derailleur. It has the X-factor, much like XTR. In this case the X is the shaped X on the front derailleur linkage. Like many Xs, it is stronger and lighter than the box-shaped piece it replaces. This front lifter also has a reshaped cage for better tire clearance and faster shifting. And, for the weight weenies, it has dropped 28g of mass, meaning not only will the shift be a bit easier, but the bike should go uphill a bit better.

People ask us about top swing vs. traditional (high clamp). There are differences. Top swing derailleurs shift faster. However, we find that traditional lasts longer, and usually spec them on complete bikes when we have a choice. Often, many go with one over the other simply because they don't have a choice in what derailleurs fit on their steeds. Many bikes are pretty complicated just above the bottom bracket area. Between shaped tubing, water bottle braze-ons, and suspension elements, many bikes can only run one or the other.

The Shimano XT FD-M771 Traditional front derailleur

comes with a multi-clamp for mounting on 28.6/31.8/34.9mm diameter seat tubes. It can function with a top- or bottom-pull cable. The new XT has also made derailleur adjustment easier by placing the set screws next to one another and at an angle where the home mechanic can easily fiddle with them when necessary. 155g. MSRP $49.99.
