INTENSE 951 FRO
Nine-Five-One. These three numbers represent the phone company's regional designation for the fertile nexus of Intense World Headquarters. 951 is also the badge given to their latest downhill supermodel. Intense has taken every lesson that they've learned with the revisions to their VPP suspension technology and incorporated them into the design of this bike along with new ideas to create their most versatile race bike yet. For the gnarliest of world cup race courses, the M6 still reigns supreme. But when Intense sponsored racers tackle anything less, or more wide open, they reach for the lighter and slightly shorter travel Intense 951 FRO.
Tech nerds rejoice! The 951 is super-adjustable. Intense strived towards and succeeded in making one of the most fine-tunable race machines on the planet. One of the key features is their new G3 dropout -- it has three positions available for the lower dropout bolt to allow for customization of wheelbase, chainstay length, bottom bracket height, and head angle. It also follows the current trend at Intense with a two-position shock mount on the upper link. Riders can quickly switch from 8" to 8.5" of plush and capable VPP travel.
Following in the footsteps of the Tracer VP and the new Uzzi VP, the 951 makes use of the 2nd generation VPP rear suspension which minimizes chain growth by 15-20% over the old version. This allows the 951 to be pedaled through even the rootiest and rockiest terrain while the rear suspension stays more active following the ground for ultimate traction at all times. Angular contact bearings help keep the links stable and laterally stiff, enhancing the already legendary Intense tracking characteristics. Greasable micro-zerks are found at the pivot points to allow for lubrication without disassembly. Bearings last longer, and the suspension action stays smooth and quiet.
Intense builds the 951 with a custom drawn Easton EA6 tubeset to handle the rigors of the most demanding race courses. It features a 1.5" headtube to utilize larger bearings for steering stability. An ISCG '05 chainguide mount ensures the 951's compatibility with the new crop of race worthy chainguides, and is also HammerSchmidt ready. It uses an 83mm bottom bracket and the G3 dropouts are available in either 135mm or 150mm width; simply specify which you'd prefer in the comments section of your order. All of the CNC machine work, welding, heat treating, and assembly is done in-house at the Intense factory in Temecula, CA.
The Intense 951 FRO comes race-ready with a Fox DHX RC4 rear shock. With its externally adjustable high and low speed compression damping, rebound damping, and boost valve for adjustable bottom out resistance, the RC4 is the most adjustable rear shock that Fox has ever made. If that isn't enough for you, upgrades are available for the infinitely adjustable Cane Creek Double Barrel shock with either a Steel (+$150) or Titanium Coil (+$250).
Intense recommends forks with 180mm to 203mm travel for the 951, and the G3 dropouts will accept standard or 12mm rear axles. It is available in small, medium, or large in Intense Red, Stealth Black, White, Team Green, Signal Blue, and for those who like it naked -- Works (raw). It requires a 31.6mm seatpost. According to Intense, a medium 951 weighs 9.5 lbs. The frame has a two year warranty against manufacturing defects.
