If you clicked onto this page, you're likely already tempted by the Santa Cruz Superlight. The hardest part of choosing a new bike is done. Perhaps you like the simpler operation of the single pivot suspension. Maybe it just looks "right", the way a frame should look. Maybe it's the price; the bike shows that you have great taste and know value.
Selection can get even simpler. We offer two pre-packaged complete bike builds so you can get your Superlight as a ready-to-ride bike rather than a frame. Going this route offers lots of benefits. Less cash outlay, less to think about, less time scouting components. More time focused on riding. This is a bit of a change for us here at Competitive Cyclist. We're usually all about the custom build. If you want that, we offer it, but we know that there’s a phenomenon known as paralysis by analysis.
If you're not looking forward to choosing the right chain or worrying about whether the brake rotor size works for your riding, then a complete bike is for you. A big plus is that Santa Cruz designers aren’t bean counters but bike riders. They know both performance and value; most of their guys started as broke cyclists figuring out how to stretch a buck.
The R XC build is the lighter of the two options, tipping the scales around 27.22lbs according to Santa Cruz. Performance is at the heart of this build as noted by the fork selection -- the lightweight and airsprung Fox 32 F100 R. The shifters and crankset are both Shimano SLX, which saves some weight and adds a little flash to the finish. The brakes are Avid Juicy 5, with 160mm rotors. The Juicy 5's have similar power to the Juicy 7's and Carbons, but without the flashy finishing touches. The Race Face bars, seatpost, and stem are now from the Evolve XC line, shedding some weight while remaining very durable. The wheels are are built by Santa Cruz, with Mavic XM 117 rims laced with DT 14g Champion spokes and brass nipples, to Shimano XT hubs. These wheels have lighter rims, lighter hubs, lighter spokes than those found on the D XC build, which translates to less rolling resistance.
The D XC build was chosen with an eye on keeping costs down, but not making any major sacrifices in performance. The drivetrain is a careful Shimano mix, with an XT rear derailleur, SLX front, Deore shifters and crankset. The brakes are the Avid Juicy 3 with 160mm rotors, a brake that is better than many top-of-the line brakes only a few years back. Bars, seat post, and stem are Race Face’s Ride XC with 25.4mm handlebar clamp; with both, the shot-peened finish increases fatigue strength, while the smart clamp designs have eliminated stress risers which can lead to stress fractures. Wheels are the bombproof Crossride Disc. Tires are the Kenda Nevegal 2.1 with a wire bead. The fork is the airsprung Rock Shox Tora 318. The rear shock is the light and reliable Fox Float R.

The Santa Cruz Superlight complete bike is available powder-coated in Black, Lime, Liquid Blue, Red, White, or Yellow. It uses a 30.9 seatpost and a 34.9mm dual-pull front derailleur. The right dropout has a replaceable derailleur hanger. The maximum-width tire that fits in the rear is 2.35". It has ISO disc brake mounts with a max rotor size of 160mm. There are braze-ons for an under the down tube water bottle cage. The frame has a two year warranty against manufacturing defects, while the bearings are guaranteed for life.
