At just $1,399, you get a Swiss-engineered multi-link suspension bike fully dressed with Shimano SLX components, a Fox Float rear shock and Marzocchi 44 front fork. The build kit is anchored by a complete Shimano SLX group -- 9-speed Rapidfire Plus shifters, derailleurs, hydraulic disc brakes, crankset, and cassette. We've been fans of SLX since it was introduced because it yields top-tier performance at a bare bones price. Alex DP20 rims laced to Shimano hubs give you an all around reliable wheelset. Lightweight Schwalbe Nobby Nic tires round out the rolling stock. The rear suspension is damped by a custom-valved Fox RP2 shock. It has adjustable rebound damping and a two-position (on or off) ProPedal lever for added low speed compression damping when needed on long climbs or non-technical terrain. The fork is a Marzocchi 44 TST2. It has 120mm of air-sprung travel to compliment the rear suspension. The TST2 has a lockout and externally adjustable compression and rebound damping. Scor components, a BMC house brand, round out the saddle and alloy seatpost, stem, and riser handlebar selections.

The Trailfox benefits from the same CAD design and FEA material testing as its more expensive siblings. The aluminum frame uses their Integrated Skeleton Concept (ISC) and is composed of two main parts -- the front and rear triangles. Each of the frame tubes are shaped specifically for their duties within the frame and are welded, bent, or hydroformed to create the profiles the engineers wanted in order to deal with the stresses as modeled in the design lab. The tubing is also triple-butted to ensure that the bike can be as light as possible while retaining strength where it's needed.

The forged aluminum links of the Advanced Pivot System (APS) provide the union between the two alloy frame sections. The short links help maintain a flex-free connection from front to back. Each pivot uses cartridge bearings to minimize friction and maximize trail sensitivity. At first glance, one might think the suspension looks similar to VPP or dw-link. While outwardly it does, APS is perhaps only more similar to dw-link in the directions the links rotate as the suspension cycles. They've used this virtual pivot type suspension for many years so you can be sure they've tweaked all the angles. BMC engineers positioned the linkages to strike a balance between bump sensitivity, stability (resistance to bobbing or effect from rider weight shift), and desired leverage ratios. The net result is a bike that soaks up bumps beautifully whether coasting, braking, or mashing on the pedals.

The only differences between this ’09 Trailfox and its current iteration are the finish, and a 20mm increase in travel (to 140mm). And it's priced about 55% less at retail.
