With over 3” in travel in a 4.5 lb. package, the Turner Nitrous is arguably the XC race bike of choice. In past years, the Nitrous was been raced and tested under the likes of Team Maxxis’ Geoff Kabush, who rode his prototype Nitrous in 2004 to NORBA championships in both the Elite Men’s XC and the Short Track, and has now recorded the most Short Track victories of all time. Kabush was quoted in a late 2004 issue of Mountain Bike magazine raving about the handling of the Nitrous on touchy, high-speed descents -- the exact sort of terrain where skilled cross-country racers open up huge gaps over their rivals. Impressive praise indeed.
In comparison to other Turner models, the Nitrous has the sleek lines of a thoroughbred, mainly due to the fact that it isn't built with the beefy stays we’ve long come to associate with Turner bikes. Nevertheless, it employs the same bushings with zerk fittings and a suspension design with a near vertical wheel path that define the Turner philosophy and are the key to their tremendous ride quality. Turner’s suspension design is a progressive rate suspension – meaning that as the suspension compresses, it requires a continual increase in force to compress it further – virtually assuring that the rider won't bottom out the travel, while still providing excellent pedalling efficiency.
Turner pushed the limits of technology with the design of the Nitrous' ultra lightweight rocker arm and asymmetrical chainstays. For 2008, the rear swingarm has been redesigned to increase strength and lateral rigidity without sacrificing a single gram. Perhaps befitting the intended use of an XC-specific race bike, they've decided to implement a 165 pound weight limit on the Nitrous -- not coincidentally Kabush’s racing weight. Despite this weight limit, our friends at Mountain Bike Action magazine tested the Nitrous in their November 2004 issue and found it very much to their liking, “David Turner’s Nitrous dual-suspension chassis is a wakeup call to the international mountain bike community that the time has come for cross-country machinery to go on a strict diet.”
The Nitrous comes stock with the pedal-efficient Fox Float RP23 rear shock. The tight tolerances and durability of Turner's pivot bushings in combination with the Fox RP23 shock combine to provide arguably the stiffest, truest-tracking swingarm in the full suspension world. Consistent with all Turner bikes, the Nitrous has small grease ports at each of the pivot points, making routine maintenance of the bushings as easy as lubing your chain. As is the case with most cross-country specific bikes, the Nitrous is best mated with an 80mm fork.
The limited edition Turner Nitrous is finished in an Sparkle Silver powdercoat and features a disc specific, clear anodized rear swingarm. It is sold out for the year with the exception of the two mediums we have in stock. It requires a 27.2mm seatpost and a 31.8 mm Traditional Top Pull Front Derailleur.
