The Turner Flux is perhaps Turner's most versatile machine. It offers you a full 4” of travel with no compromise whatsoever to pedaling efficiency. The Flux essentially merges Turner's critically acclaimed 5 Spot frame with their cross country rocket, the Nitrous. At 5.25 pounds, the Flux sheds a quarter pound from the 2007 iteration, thanks to a newly designed rear swingarm shared with the Nitrous.
Whoa! Nitrous, you say? That cross-country-rocket-of-a-bike? No worries, it's got plenty of beef -- even more than last year in fact. Dave and company have been testing this for better than a year, and it's stronger than the 2007 version, and sheds better than a quarter pound in the process. 2008's heftier rockers add a few of those grams back, but in the end, we still find ourselves 112 grams better off. Not bad in a year's work. A la the Nitrous, the lower shock tabs have been moved from the seatube to the juncture of the down and seattubes -- this with one purpose in mind: make the bike tougher by removing stress from the seattube. All this to say: we think it makes the ideal bike for endurance or marathon racers or those who still enjoy cross-country racing, but enjoy getting out for some “fun time” when not training.
Our friends at Adventure Sports Magazine echoed our sentiment in April 2005. "The Turner (Flux) was the most efficient climber of all the full suspension models in this test, in part a function of the RP3 shock. It scrambled up rocky climbs and shot forward under hard pedaling. On descents, the shock's tune-ability can render the Flux a super-efficient racer or a more plush descender, a major plus for the middle or long-distance racer who could adjust tuning over the course for terrain or fatigue. When matched with a well-tuned geometry that's neither edgy nor slack, the Flux is almost unparalleled for its versatility."
The Turner Flux was designed around the Fox Float RP23 rear shock and the use of a 100mm travel fork. The Flux is engineered with Turner's TNT suspension design which maintains a near-vertical wheel path, using bushings with zerk fittings at the pivots, not bearings. Turner enthusiastically touts the benefits of bushings over bearings, citing the incredibly tight tolerances, low and easy maintenance, long life, all of which translate into a torsionally stiff rear swingarm. The Flux can deliver either a firm pedaling platform or a plush, responsive trail riding machine, depending on how you choose to tune it. The Flux has adaptability for virtually any situation you throw it in.
Take a good, long look at the Flux and you'll notice the critical details that set Turner apart: the grease ports at each of the pivots, its flawless welds, the sleek, CNC-machined lines of the swingarm, the boxy rear stays to accentuate stiffness and strength, the reinforcement yoke at the juncture of the seat and top tubes, and an incredibly simple, well thought-out approach to the bike’s design. And almost as if its purpose is to keep your focus on those very technical details, the Flux is powdercoated in your choice of two beautiful colors, and not cluttered with decals.
The disc-specific Turner Flux is available in a Candy Apple Blue or Copper powdercoats in XS, Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large sizes. It requires a 27.2mm seatpost and a 34.9 mm Traditional Top Pull Front Derailleur. Optional powder coat colors of Bright Yellow, Fire Engine Red, Granny Smith Green, Sparkle Blue, Gold Dust Orange, Gloss White, Semi Gloss Black, Iron Glimmer, Sparkle Silver, Robin's Egg Blue, Charcoal Metallic Blue and Luscious Pink are available for a $100 upcharge and a willingness to wait the 4-6 week expected turnaround. Or for the weight weenies, with a short wait and no upcharge, you can get it raw -- that's right, no finish whatsoever.
