The Titus Racer X Exogrid is indisputably the most gorgeous mountain bike we've ever laid eyes on. While the Exogrid tubes are so lovely that you might think they're there as window-dressing alone, they in fact play a vital role in defining the ride quality of Titus' premier cross-country bike. What, exactly, is Exogrid? It's rather easy to define: Titus takes an aerospace-grade titanium tube and using a laser cuts away material in what's more or less a latticework pattern -- Titus refers to it as a "Titanium Skeleton". In some cases they cut away as much as a full half-pound of Ti material. They then create a reinforcement of carbon fiber that's both lighter and stiffer (where desired) than the Ti. As beautiful as it is, the Exogrid structure is first and foremost a performance upgrade. It's Titus' lightest bike, and it increases torsional stiffness by 40%, while making it 15% more compliant.
The most important tube on any bike is its downtube, and the downtube is the one tube that gets the Exogrid treatment on the Racer X Exogrid. Otherwise, it's identical to the Racer X Titanium. You get the same strut-style Horst link design, and the traditional rockers you see on a Horst bike are instead replaced by an ultralight three piece carbon fiber X-Link linkage. The new-for-2006 swingarm has tapered tubes and a hollow boxed lower forging. You get carbon seatstays to enhance the shock absorption you gain from the Fox RP23, and you'll feel unparalleled stiffness thanks to its use of four oversized cartridge bearings stacked at the main pivot.
Titus recommends the use of either an 80 or 100mm front suspension fork with the Racer X, to be paired in relation to the travel of the frame. The small size comes in both 80 and 100mm travel versions. The hand polished Titus Racer X Ti is available in Small 100, Medium 100, and Large 100. It is also available XXS 80, XS 80, and Small 80. Or, for an additional $300, you can customize the frame's geometry -- this charge will be assessed after you check out. It requires a 30.9 mm seatpost and a 34.9mm top-swing, dual-pull front derailleur.
