If you’re not racing, this might well be the all-round high-performance wheelset of choice. It’s almost Crossmax SL light while having much greater strength, and most of the features that the SL has. Mavic says this wheel is for Epic bike rides, and while a wheel can always be lighter, having a little extra meat to protect against that which is beyond description is a good thing. It sure makes us feel better about night riding with these wheels.
The Mavic Crossmax ST Disc is chock full of features starting with the rim. It is made from Maxtal aluminum, has the Fore drilling so that only the outside wall of the rim has been drilled for the spoke to go through. The rim can go tubed or UST without a rim strip, which is another way to keep the weight down. Weight has been shaved between spoke holes by Mavic’s ISM process. There are 24 straight-pull round spokes front and rear made of Zicral. The spoke pattern is cross-two on the front wheel. The rear has Mavic’s Isopulse pattern; radial on the drive side, two-cross on the left side. The hub bodies are oversize aluminum and the method for attaching discs is either International Standard or Center-Lock. Both front and rear axles are hollow and designed for quick releases. The front is 9x100mm and the rear 9x135mm. The rear hub as a cassette designed for eight or nine cogs and employs Mavic’s Force Transfer System for more reliable engagement. Rim size is 559x19. Mavic recommends tires 1.5”-2.3” in width.
This wheelset comes with Mavic’s high-end BX601 quick releases, UST valves and application accessories, a wheel magnet for the front wheel, a bearing adjustment tool for the rear wheel, and a spoke wrench for the rear wheel. 1660g.
