Mr. Merckx obviously doesn't need a formal introduction, but his new collections of bicycles — developed with some of the most advanced technological innovations on the market — are so good that they deserve to be carefully detailed. As with everything that wears the Eddy Merckx signature, the EMX-3/Shimano Ultegra Complete Road Bike - 2011 was built on a race-oriented platform, blending low weight, stiffness, and speed into a complete package.

Starting with the frame itself, Merckx's EMX-3 was constructed using a full Carbon Laminate + layup. Essentially, this technique involves layering the carbon fiber sheets together in ways that maximize the strength and rigidity of the frame. This layup is combined with Merckx's Optimized Structural Reinforcement (OSR), which, as the name suggests, places high modular (30HM) stiffness fibers in strategic areas for added reinforcement. These fibers are used in conjunction with high-strength fibers at force-load-heavy zones, such as the bottom bracket and head tube junctions. By using these techniques together, Merckx engineers were able to add material where it's needed for increased rigidity, while removing material at less flex-prone areas, thus keeping the overall weight as low as possible. This is the same technique used for all of Merckx's top-end carbon road frames, as it yields the ideal combination of stiffness, low weight, and vertical compliance.

With a slightly relaxed geometry, the EMX-3 provides a comfortable ride, yet it still possesses the race-tuned characteristics necessary for competitive road racing. Aside from the frame's optimized layup schedule, the fork has also been designed to deliver maximum stability and speed. The blades flare to a wide shape toward the 1-1/4 to 1-1/8in steerer, which works to both cut aerodynamic drag and to provide precise handling up front. Similarly, at the rear end of the frame, both the seatstays and chainstays were designed with handling and power transfer in mind. Their slender shapes provide the ideal blend of comfort and transmission of power directly to the rear wheel.

For the build of the EMX-3, Merckx complemented its BB86 bottom bracket with a full Shimano Ultegra 10-speed group set. The machine includes Shimano's compact 50/34t crankset and an 11-25t cassette. At the cockpit, the build features an aluminum handlebar and stem, with an Eddy Merckx saddle perched atop the carbon-wrapped seatpost. In terms of wheels, the EMX-3 rolls on a pair of Fulcrum Racing 5 clinchers.

The Merckx EMX-3/Shimano Ultegra Complete Road Bike - 2011 is available in the sizes 45 and 48cm and in the colors Silver/black and White/black/red.

Still Riding It Like I Stole It

Sometimes, I feel like I did, when I ride with guys who have wheelsets costing more than my complete bike. I've upgraded a bit, changed a bit, but all in all, I'm very satisfied with my Eddy. It's now a Merck...er, MIX of the Dura Ace I like, and a Plasma stem/bar combo came my way and went right on. Even with others on Williers, Tarmacs, and Madones, people walk to the Merckx and pick it up. Sometimes, they even ask permission first. I used C/C's fit calculator, and it's the bike for me, period. I still love my steel bikes, but a couple have "left in a huff." No better road bike for the money, in my opinion, and worth any upgrade.

This is a great looking bike. This is my 3rd ride. I am just going faster and faster each time, and I am feeling more comfortable with EMX-3 after adjusting the seat height and angle. This is size 48cm and it fits me really well. I am 5'10" . If I am going to do anything to it, I might just get a slightly shorter stem. (I think it came with 13cm FSA stem). It is a great upgrade for me from a alloy bike. I am a happy owner of this Eddy Merckx EMX-3.

Merckx sizing leaves a lot to be desired, I'm 5"9' have an inseam of 29.5" I usually ride 52 small, is 48cm Merckx the right size for me?

Yes, Merckx sizing is a bit different from most. I think you would either fit a 42 or 45 better than a 48. A Merckx 42 fits like a 52 would from other brands. Contact me if you have any more questions and I'd be happy to help you decide which size you would fit better.- mfarr@backcountry.com

Selling my Cannondale....

I already dug the EM brand, with an '85 Corsa Extra that is all the bike anyone needs. However, I needed a less twitchy stable-mate to my carbon Cinelli, and the chance to get the EMX-3 was there. Once I swapped in red Jagwire Race, Dura Ace C24's, an FSA Pro crankset, and FSA Gossamer calipers, it was sub-16 without pedals. After repeated hard-riding, no quarter-given group rides, I'm ready to release my Six13 to some other rider, and get on with it. It's not just "another black/red/white bike," it's climbing and sprinting with anything out there, at a very affordable cost. Tremendous value.
