It's safe to say that Mr. Merckx, also known as "The Cannibal" due to the way he continually devoured his opponents, isn't to be taken lightly. Over the course of his storied cycling career, he amassed 525 victories, 54 of which were claimed in a single season. And so, as with every bicycle that wears the Eddy Merckx signature, the EMX-1/Shimano 105 Complete Road Bike - 2012 was built on a competition-consuming, race-oriented platform that blends low weight, stiffness, and speed into a complete package.
Starting with the frame itself, Merckx's EMX-1 was constructed using a full Carbon Laminate + layup. Essentially, this technique involves layering the carbon fiber sheets together in ways that maximize the strength and rigidity of the frame. This layup is combined with Merckx's structural reinforcement technology, which places high modular (24HM) stiffness fibers in strategic areas for added stiffness. These fibers are used in conjunction with high-strength fibers at force-load-heavy zones, such as the bottom bracket and head tube junctions. By using these techniques together, Merckx engineers were able to add material where it's needed for increased rigidity, while removing material at less flex-prone areas to keep the overall weight as low as possible. This is the same technique used for all of Merckx's top-end carbon road frames, as it yields the ideal combination of stiffness, low weight, and vertical compliance.
With a slightly relaxed geometry, the EMX-1 provides a comfortable ride, yet it still possesses the race-tuned characteristics necessary for competitive road racing. Aside from the frame's optimized layup schedule, the fork has also been designed to deliver maximum stability and speed. The blades flare to a wide shape toward the 1-1/4 to 1-1/8in steerer, which works to both cut aerodynamic drag and to provide precise handling up front. Similarly, at the rear end of the frame, both the seatstays and chainstays were designed with handling and power transfer in mind. Their slender shapes provide the ideal blend of comfort and transmission of power directly to the rear wheel.
For the build of the EMX-1, Merckx complemented its BB86 bottom bracket with a full Shimano 105 10-speed group set. The machine includes Shimano's 105 compact 50/34t crankset and an 11-25t cassette. At the cockpit, the build features a FSA Wing Compact handlebar and FSA Team Issue stem, with a Prologo Kappa STN saddle perched atop the FSA Team Issue seatpost. In terms of wheels, the EMX-1 rolls on a pair of Fulcrum Racing 7 clinchers.

According to the bike fit guide on this site I ride a 52cm road bike. I have a 30" inseam. Will the 51cm be a decent fit for me? From other comments it seems like this bike might not be standard when it comes to sizing. Thoughts?

I am 5'9" with a measured inseam of 33"....
I am 5'9" with a measured inseam of 33". I used the fit guide to find my frame size. It says that I should ride a 57cm. Is that correct? Seems too big. I also used the fit guide from Competitive Cyclist and the results was 53cm. Aside from getting on the bike, how can I find out if the 51cm EMX-1 is right for me?
I bought an EMX-1 (2013) before Christmas. I'm 5'9" too, with a 32" inside leg. I bought the 48 frame (effective seat tube 55.4cm) having test ridden it. Seems like it would be too small, but actually fits perfectly and has a nice compact feeling ride.

Received my bike today and it looks fantastic - first ride in the morning. The packaging of the bike was superb! There wasn't a mark on the bike and the wheels were true. I only had to make a minor adjustment on the centering of the front brake and a cable adjustment to eliminate a little bit of big chainring/small cog front cage rub. Thanks Competitive Cyclist, great job.
In the size chart, why does the named size...
In the size chart, why does the named size on the left most column not match either the top tube or center tube length? I am looking for a 48 cm top tube length bike. Which size would correspond to this for this model.
The sizing on the Merckx bikes can admittedly be a bit confusing. It is tough to discern where exactly merckx is extrapolating these frame sizes from. That said, comparing stack and reach in conjunction with the effective top tube helps to compare bikes of different brands in a more like manner. If you are looking for a true 48cm effective top tube, I'm not quite sure the Merck bikes get quite small enough. I currently ride a Trek frame 56, which is mi correct size in a EMX1?
Which of the Trek frames do you ride? The Madone with H2 geometry in a 56 has a 56.0 effective toptube, and would best match the Merckx in a 51cm frame. This has a lightly longer top tube at 56.7, but a very similar reach at 384. Nailing down the correct size can be tough, so feel free to check out our fit calculator for a little extra guidance. I have had this bike for a year and a half and all I can say is it rides beautifully and turns heads even at it's price point. If you like riding a quality bike and like being a little different this is your ticket to an old world brand. Only down side are the Asian gruppo on a European steed but since the bike is manufactured in Asia that's what you get (and to be fair 105 is an excellent group, just not Campy)!! Relaxed yet responsive ride, farly light weight and great looks! Buy it, you won't be disappointed.
