If you know downhill, you know the Maxxis Minion DHF 3C 26x2.5 Tire, simple as that. The longstanding benchmark has seen countless other tires try to take it off its pedestal, but it remains the mixed-to-dry conditions go-to for riders and racers in the know. And if you’re just getting introduced, DHF stands for Down Hill Front, but in reality, you’ll see this tire mounted up front and rear, anywhere that steep fall lines and loose conditions require a tire that you can trust.
This particular version of the Minion is built on Maxxis’s dual-ply gravity casing, which employs a butyl insert to maximize flat-resistance. The 3C nomenclature means that there are three compounds employed in the creation of this tire—a firm compound for the base of the knobs, a softer compound down the centerline, and the softest rubber finding its way onto the sideknobs. With a stiffer base, the knobs deform less, providing a harder bite than the full Super Tacky version. The softer sideknobs grip like rabid dogs when you get leaned over, while the firmer center knobs roll fast and have a longer wear life. The meaty center knobs dig into loam, moon dust, and anything short of full-on peanut butter mud. And the lack of intermediate knobs opens up more real estate for the side knobs to grip, which is part of the reason that they’re so widely favored among World Cup racers and local hotshots alike. These being a race tire, you shouldn't expect these to hold up to 100 days of bike park laps, but when traction is key, there are few tires to rival the DHF.
