Tracing roots to a time when rim manufacturers' finally provided wheel builders with something other than 700c road rims, the 29in Maxxis Ignitor Mountain Bike Tire was essential to the big-wheeled movement. That was nearly ten years ago, and the 29 x 2.1in Ignitor continues to roll fast with two casing options.
Both Ignitors use Maxxis' Aramid folding bead, all-round proficient 70a durometer rubber, and ramped pentagonal knobs. But, the F60 SC uses a 60 tpi nylon casing and the F120 SC eXC/EXO has a 120 tpi nylon casing. The later adds 100-grams to the rotational picture, but gives a more supple ride over varied terrain.
Usually higher tpi counts result in a lighter tire, however, in this instance Maxxis' EXO protection adds an extremely cut-resistant and abrasion-resistant material to the sidewalls. While this increases weight, the added puncture protection is much appreciated and the EXO is highly flexible to ensure performance remains unaffected. As stated above, the Ignitor continues to use ramped pentagonal knobs.
This favored shape reinforces the knobs profile in cornering, pedaling, and stopping vectors for efficiency and positive traction in a variety of trial conditions -- with plenty of World Cup victories to back it up. The Maxxis Ignitor 29er Mountain bike Tire has a clincher bead and comes in an XC-friendly 2.1in width.
