Maxxis Aspen Tire - 29in $0.00
The XC bikes of today are capable of much more than the spindly offerings of just a decade ago, but that's left some tire manufacturers behind the evolutionary curve. That, however, is not the case for Maxxis and its Aspen 29in Tire.
With a 2.1-inch width, the Aspen's casing is large enough to smooth trail irregularities, while its tread design is specifically designed to optimize a dual rubber compound. If you look at the center ridge, large, ramped blocks are interspersed among closely spaced, narrow lugs. The large blocks transmit pedal and braking forces by resisting flex, while the narrow lugs bite into loss trail.
This combination, along with the harder rubber compound, perfectly balances traction, rolling resistance, and tire wear. At the edges of the Aspen tire, aggressive knobs work with a softer compound in order to place traction as its highest priority. This allows more margin of error at the tire's limit.
For the casing, Maxxis incorporated a 120 TPI count. This makes the Aspen 29in tire increasingly supple over trail irregularities, while also boosting durability against punctures.
The Maxxis Aspen 29in Tire is available in the color Black and in a 2.1-inch size.

How durable are these next to the Ikon?
tread: approx. 200 miles less or more depending on how you ride.
sidewall: way less or about the same depending on the ikon you get. Do keep in mind that aspens are a race tire and have a light sidewall. They tend to tear easily.
I've ridden them almost every ride for the last 4-5 years. I love them. Get them at the right tire pressure and they do amazingly well. I have no problem keeping up with friends on beefier tires. That said the Ikon has a lot more tread and room for error.
I get about 600 miles out of a rear tire, more for the front.
