The King is back.

After a brief hiatus, the cycling masters at Mavic have returned to the pedal game, and the Zxellium SLR Pedal stands as the French brand’s penultimate pedal. With a carbon fiber body, composite springs, and a massive body plate that maximizes power transmission, you’re looking at a pedal that will please the most powerful riders. And thanks to the iClic cleat interface, clipping in and out is a snap. At 190 grams, it’s both strong enough for a Clydesdale, and svelte enough for discerning climbers.

The Zxellium SLR is second only to the SLR-Ti in Mavic’s pedal hierarchy. What that means is you get the same carbon fiber body, carbon springs, and heaping spoonful of technology as the SLR-Ti. The difference lies in the axle. As you may have guessed from the name, the SLR-Ti employs a titanium axle, for a weight savings of 35 grams over the SLR’s steel axle. While the weight savings is marginal, the stronger steel axle makes the SLR a better choice for heavier, or extremely powerful riders.

If you’re looking at the Zxellium line and trying to figure out why it looks familiar, it’s because Mavic commissioned the pedal wizards at Time to build its newest lineup of pedals. The resulting pedal borrows heavily from Time’s venerable Xpresso line, which means you can expect both world-class foot retention and easy disengagement when the time comes. The iClic cleat interface makes clipping in a breeze, even at higher release tensions. You get the benefit of generous float, five degrees in either direction, to be specific. When combined with the 2.5mm of lateral float underneath the cleat, you get a pedal that won’t hinder your body’s natural movements, allowing you to ride pain-free. But Mavic knows that some riders prefer a more direct feel, and accordingly, you’re able to increase resistance on the cleat.

Float isn’t the only area where the Zxellium series excels. Thanks to the oversized body, power transmission is maximized when you start mashing. That jumbo-sized body plate is replaceable, which means you’ll enjoy the same direct response season after season. Furthermore, the efficiency of your pedal rotations is maximized through the use of an amazingly low stack height. With a scant 13.5mm separating the centerline of the axle from the top of the cleat, you’re able to push rounder pedal strokes, and enjoy the overall stability provided by lowering your center of gravity.

The Mavic Zxellium SLR Pedal is available in one size, and in the color Black.
