Description

Peloton-leading comfort.

You wear a top-of-the-line kit and carbon helmet. Why not treat your feet to the same level of comfort? With its Zxellium Shoes, Mavic has not only created a shoe that molds to your foot for comfort on long training rides, it also created a shoe that reduces flexing so that all your power is transferred to the pedals, not to your shoes.

Mavic employs a bevy of details to make sure that your foot is comfortably and securely locked into place so you can pedal in efficient circles. One is the Energy Frame, a thermoplastic exoskeleton that wraps from the carbon sole over the outside of the forefoot. It limits stretch and holds your foot in place with the Ergo Lite Ratcheting buckle. Farther back, the Energy Lock carbon heel counter keeps your hindfoot in place by cradling the calcaneous bone. Two Velcro Ergo Straps complete the job of securing the Energy Frame outside your foot with the seamless Ergo Lite upper on the inside of your foot. They use small Kevlar cords for a stretch-free system that allows a perfect adjustment every time you slide into the shoes.

The well-appointed upper is complemented by the Ergo Fit 3D insole. It has three densities of padding, along with a nice heel cup and metatarsal pad. The insole is covered in an anti-bacterial material that resists odor-causing bacteria. The tongue overlaps itself for protection and is lightly padded, with just enough material to spread out the pressure and still allow the foot to breathe. Actually, the padding in the heel, tongue, and insole are called Auto Fit because they'll mold to your foot without the need for heat.

Mavic's Carbon Energy Full Carbon sole is an integral part of the stiffness/lightness equation. You can bet that it's stiff enough to resist flexing even during the most brutal efforts against the pedals. And since you lift each shoe 90 times a minute while you ride, you know that a feathery light shoe is indeed the way to go. While it doesn't get discussed much, sole thickness, or rather thinness, is also important. The carbon sole of the Zxellium is merely 5.5mm thick. That puts your foot 7mm from the top of the cleat. The closer you are to the pedal, the less energy you lose to "rocking torque."

The Mavic Zxellium Shoes are available in Black/white and come in whole and half sizes from 6 - 13.5. They come with "recommended length" screws for the threaded inserts in the outsole; so thin is the sole they've provided shorter screws. Weight (for a size 8.5 shoe) is 275g per shoe.

Fantastic Road Shoe

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm a huge fan of the Mavic Zxellium model. I had an earlier version of the shoe that I used heavily and I bought this set to replace the old ones.

A couple things I love about this model:
1. Breathability--great ventilation which saves my feet during the summer. During the winter I wear shoe covers over these.
2. Not too narrow! I've had continuous problems with the toe box on road shoes squeezing my foot too much, causing "hot spots" and numbness. No such problem with these shoes! Plenty of room in the toe box, but not so much that you are slip and sliding around.
3. No break in period. I put these puppies on and was ready to rock and roll. The only break in would be your cleat placement on the shoe, but as far as fit goes these beauties were great from the beginning.
4. Power transfer. How can you go wrong with a full carbon sole baby?

Also, I'm a woman and use these shoes. Bought them in a 6.5 (I'm a women's 7.5/8). Great shoe for either gender!

Get them while they are on sale because they are a steal!

Really Like These Shoes

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Mavic did some quality design on these (and their other) shoes. The soles are super stiff, well finished and look sleek. The uppers are built nicely and use quality materials, and use a nice color scheme. They're as nice as Sidi shoes, and in many areas, the material choices and assembly is better than Sidi (there, I said it). BUT, it is a shoe, so if it does not fit you well, none of that is of benefit to you.

Great shoes for comfort and stiffness

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought these to replace an older pair of Sidi Genius 5 shoes. Although I had the "mega" width in the Sidi, I found that the standard Mavic fit me just fine, possibly due to the design that wraps the foot rather than pinching (similar to the old 3 buckle Raichle ski boots or the modern Full Tilt). The lining also forms to your foot. I found that for the first 20 miles or so they were a bit tight, but by mile 50 they seemed to be all set.

Power transfer on these shoes feels light years better than my older Sidis, though to be fair the Sidis had much more wear. I'm using these with speedplay pedals, and I think that the thinner sole of these shoes helps put the foot closer to the axle than most other shoes. Due to the curvature of the sole, you'll need to use shims for the speedplay base plate, or if you have the v.2 cleats, use the #6 snap in shims.

Good Stuff

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Just picked up a pair of these shoes. Was coming from Mavic Pro Roads that I had worn for 3 years.

These are very sharp looking. The black actually has a metallic flake in it, very cool stuff. I wish there was a little less white on them, I like the all black shoe style, but I can live with it. I love the tongue on these shoes, it's not a true shoe tongue so doesn't hurt my ankle while pedaling like some other shoes. They fit very close to my dress shoe size (10D = Mavic 10). They are very light and feel like they have great contact with the pedal. So far very happy with them, and look forward to pedaling many thousands of miles in them.
