Less rolling resistance better responsiveness

If you're rolling with a Mavic Yksion Pro Griplink on your front wheel, you're going to need the Yksion Pro Powerlink Clincher Tire for your rear. Though you may wonder why you would need a rear specific tire, Mavic has engineered the Pro Powerlink to speed up your bike through smooth rollers, hard corners, and inclement weather.

You probably already knew this, but your rear wheel serves a different role on your bike than your front wheel. With the majority of your weight over the rear wheel, you need less rolling resistance. So, with this in mind Mavic engineers designed the tire to be highly responsive by using the harder 70a rubber compound down the middle. And since you still need grip on your rear tire while cornering, the soft and grippy 60a durometer rubber cases the side walls. The rubber isn't the only piece of technology that makes the Pro Powerlink Clincher a great rear tire. A high density casing lines the tire, improving its flex to prevent rolling it at a lower PSI.

Flat protection is also important while you're training and racing. Mavic uses a 127 TPI casing throughout the tire -- tough enough to stave off flats on the worst roads and cobbled streets. An additional Kevlar breaker is used under the tread for extra protection. Surprisingly, this addition only adds a superficial amount of weight to the construction.

The Mavic Yksion Pro Powerlink Clincher Tire weighs around 190 grams. It is available in the color Black/white and in 23 and 25mm sizes.

Happy so far.....

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Got the grip link and power link included with a set of Ksyrium S wheels I purchased here. I have a little over 300 miles on them and they are good so far. Wet traction for general workout riding has been good for me, even pushing it a bit. I weigh in at 200 pounds and I've only had one flat so far, and I think that was due to a rushed tire re-mount job by yours truly- I think I had a bit of the tube stuck in between the bead and rim.

Dry traction is great and confidence in high speed turns has been bolstered. I do feel the 23c tires in general may be a little harsh for me, I may replace these with 25s when the time comes.

Good Dry Asphalt Tire

I haven't had much rain riding experience with these. In the dry LA climate, these tires are really nice on pavement; good spin, light, smooth and decent traction on corners and uphill climbs. Gravel and dirt are actually okay if you stay straight, but no confidence is instilled while turning on a gravel/dirt covered surface; not recommended.
Again, not surprising since these are tread-less slicks.

I've had these tires for 1.5 years, which came with my Ksyrium SLR wheels, and they are fairly durable considering the miles I've put on them, but not the most durable I've used. The rear, as usual, has worn out way quicker than the front tire, so I will most likely just add a new rear since the front has plenty of life left in it.

I may try the Vredestein Tricomp since I am wanting a bit more traction and durability for the crappy LA roads and pothole, gravel and dirt roads of Griffith Park.

Looks-wise, these tires (SSC) are a nice match with the wheels; matte black with a minimal label.

Good performance tire

I put a set of these on my CAAD10 and really liked the performance. Very light weight and they spin up quickly and grip great in dry weather. They weren't designed for wet weather riding and I don't ride in the rain any more so I did not have any traction problems. They looked great on my Mavic rims. Never had one to puncture but I ride pretty good roads. Only problem I had was that I only got about 3,000 miles out of them-I got 4,000 miles out of Conti 4000S. Also, the front tire (Griplink) will outlast the back tire (Powerllink) and you can't rotate so you either mix in another tire or just throw them away when the back goes.

Don't ride in wet

Was raining lightly yesterday, roads were wet but totally soaked. Descending on a road with -8 to -11 grade, and it was pretty terrifying. I could feel the tires losing traction every time I applied medium to high pressure on the brakes. While I managed to make it down the hill, my hands were shaking pretty bad at the end of it. Not safe at all. Also these tires are not puncture resistant at all. Managed to get a flat in the front. The tires look awesome especially with Ksyrium/R-SYS SLR black, but they are definitely going to get someone hurt if they caught in the rain. Do not buy unless you only ride when its dry out.

Poor wet traction

The tire is durable and fast enough for me over the 1500 miles I used it. The deal breaker is its lack of traction in wet conditions. I've slid out and crashed twice on wet pavement - not pushing it either.

Average Tire

I've had these tires for 1.5 years now. Out of the box they roll well, but they seemed to have worn out fairly quickly. I maybe put 300 miles on them and the front tire is already squaring. I do ride a lot of canyons in Salt Lake, so maybe that contributes to the wear. I think my next tire purchase will be Conti's. Looking forward to that day.

Great for racing

This is the 2nd set I've purchased. They look great on the Cosmic Carbone's and are a good overall race tire. They wear a little faster than say a Conti GP 4000s but then again they are lighter,etc.. Great Tire.

Flat resistance claim is solid

I live in Yuma Arizona where road surfaces are generally poor, littered with debris, and abundant with puncture vine thorns. If a tire isn't flat resistant you will know on your very first ride. I'm a diehard fan of Conti 4000s and the only reason I ran the Mavics was due to my purchase of a Cosmic Carbone SLR wheelset. I was skeptical but I have over 500 flat free miles on these tires so far, so the flat resistance claim is solid. The tires roll well, have a smooth ride, and confident feel. I would buy these tires again.

Update: After 1K miles I started flatting from puncturevine thorns. Up until then zero problems. Still plenty of tread life. Probably an excellent choice for most areas, but I am remounting new Conti 4000s.

Dissapointing

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought a pair (power and grip) and I received a defective tire out of the box. It had an irregular roll AND exposed thread. Backcountry was great at sending a replacement and once I slapped it on the wheel, I was back in business...for about 4 miles where I got a flat. I rolled on my crappy Vittoria Rubino's for 1000 mile with out a flat but four miles in a got a flat on these expensive tires. I know flats are a part of life but now I have a tire with tear in the casing after FOUR miles over the same route that I take daily. Do Not Buy these tires!
