Through the mountains, you need responsive wheels that move with you, transferring your power to the ground, and helping you move more efficiently. However, carbon fiber isn't made of magic, and it won't always perform the required duties. Luckily, Mavic's dedication to building wheels for every riding scenario continues to expand with the R-Sys SLR Tubular Wheels. And though you may be blinded by the idea of full carbon wheels with deep rim profiles, the 22mm front and 25mm rear rim depths of the R-sys SLR Wheels go toe-to-toe with carbon aero construction and weight.
The R-sys SLR Tubulars are made with Mavic's Maxtal aluminum and receive its Intern Spoke Milling to keep the weight of the rim down. This process aids in the creation of the wheel's high strength-to-weight ratio, and to further increase the wheels stiffness, the R-sys uses Mavic's Soude Usine Process to form the rim seam. Basically, the seam is arc welded and milled for a smooth finish that forms an incredibly strong rim joint. Accordingly, it reduces vibration and nearly eliminates brake shudder at the rim.
To keep the rim light and strong, the Mavic Fore drilling method has been used. Instead of drilling through both rim walls to get the spokes into place, only a single wall is drilled. This makes the wheel four times more resistant to fatigue while increasing the rim's rigidity by 20 percent. The rim has also been given an Exalith treatment that increases braking power, delays rim wear, and maintains the anthracite coloring for thousands of kilometers of training and racing.
The R-Sys rims roll smoothly on Black aluminum hubs. Equipped with QRM+ bearings, they're double-sealed for longevity. Each hub allows for micro-fine, preload adjustments without requiring you to remove your wheel from the bike. Keeping with the lightweight design, a Force Transfer System Light is used in the freehub body. This reinforces the contact area between the aluminum hub body and the pawls with two stainless steel inserts for a better engagement.
Connecting the hubs to the R-sys rims are ultra-stiff, lightweight carbon fiber Tracomp spokes. The front wheel uses 16 spokes for a radial lacing, and the rear has 20 spokes with a two-cross drive-side and radial non-drive side lacing pattern. Tracomp spokes provide an incredible amount of rigidity, because they flex less under load. And when the spoke experiences less compression it's less prone wheel deflection.
Mavic didn't want to sacrifice ride quality by running just any old tubular tires on these wheels. Expanding the line of its wheel-tire system, Mavic has included Griplin/ Power link front and rear specific tubular tires with the wheels. With a 210 TPI and incredible cornering capability, these tires will stand up to the likes of the Hell of the North and hold onto hair-pin turns during descents.
The Mavic R-Sys SLR Tubular Wheelset weighs in around 1735 grams with tires and 1275 grams without. They come in the color Black and are available with either a Shimano/SRAM or Campagnolo compatible freehub body. Mavic Exalith 2 brake pads come with the wheels to ensure a quiet and high level of braking performance. Also included with the wheels are BR601 quick releases, wheelbags, computer magnet, bearing adjustment tool, spoke wrench, spoke holder for aerodynamic spokes, Tracomp ring tool, and a user guide. Front and Rear wheels are sold separately.
Note: The tires do not come pre-glued to the rims.

These are fantastic wheels and a huge bargain here at Competitive Cyclist. I bought them specifically as my race wheels and I found that I used them quite a bit more than that.
The first aspect to think about is the tubular aspect of these wheels. The benefits of tubulars are two fold. They have an amazing ride quality and help to reduce the weight of the tire/wheel combo. Specifically to these wheels, when mounted the tire wheel combo is incredibly light. This is key to rapid accelerations and climbing.
They are great climbing wheels as is mentioned in the product description. The weight really helps here, but for me, these are awesome climbing wheels because of the Exilath braking surface. It is simply amazing and has to be felt to be believed. It gave me a renewed confidence descending. I discovered the braking and descending abilities on a training ride and fell in love with the wheels a second time.
My primary use for these wheels is in criteriums where their stiffness and low weight were very helpful with the constant slowing and accelerating that occurs in a pack situation. I also found that the tubulars really helped me corner better.
I can't say enough good about these wheels. I know not everyone loves the tubular aspect of them and is worried about mounting and flats, but I carry a can of fix a flat and feel that the benefits far outweigh the risk.
Would these be good for cyclocross? Or, would cross tires be too wide for this rim width?

You will need to purchase tubular glue, as this wheelset does not come with glue to adhere the tires to the rims. I recommend Vittoria Mastik' glue.
