One helmet for any discipline.

In the initial design phase of the Plasma Helmet, Mavic asked itself a nagging question -- why should anyone have to buy a helmet for both mountain and road? Accordingly, Mavic developed a lightweight, well-ventilated, and aerodynamic shape that satisfies our inner-roadie, while maintaining a rough-and-tumble durability for the trail.

Most importantly, Mavic devoted itself to making the Plasma the most comfortable helmet that you'll try on all year. First, Mavic looked at optimizing the actual shape of the helmet. So, it conducted cranial mapping tests to make certain that the Plasma closely matches typical head shapes. Additionally, Mavic identified the not-so-obvious pressure points and contours, and made the interior shape of the helmet consequently flow along with the curves of the skull. But, even with a mound of data, there were still variances. This is where Mavic's Ergo Hold System comes into play. It allows for as much as six centimeters of one-handed, on-the-fly size adjustment. For the final touches on fit perfection, as well as excellent moisture management, Mavic also included its Ergo Fit Pro Pad. At first glance, it might not seem like much, but the Ergo Fit Pro Pad is a low density, open cell foam that wicks water away from the skin and transports it to where it can quickly evaporate.

After guaranteeing comfort, Mavic took a hard look at the aerodynamic and durability aspects of the exterior. First, Mavic fashioned a sleek, low-volume profile. Then, looking towards ventilation, Mavic addressed a common ailment of helmet design. Typically, increased ventilation equates directly to a decreased level of impact security. Not accepting this give-and-take principle, Mavic developed the Ergo Protec Alutex reinforcement. This technology makes it possible to build in huge frontal ventilation ports without compromising any of the helmet's crash protection. So, not only are you riding cool and protected, but the aggressive shape enhances your aerodynamic position. Finally, with a thoughtful nod to those of you who'll be using the Plasma on the trails, Mavic has included a removable visor and plugs.

The Mavic Plasma Helmet has been given reflective highlights in order to increase your visibility to motorists when you're caught out after dark. The helmet is available in the sizes Small, Medium, and Large and in the colors Black/silver metallic, White/white, White/silver metallic, and White/red.

1 yr and counting

I've been using this for 1 yr and it is a fantastic helmet.
I ride in hawaii so 80-95 degree rides. This thing vents really well and feels light enough. I've never had any problems with the knob at the back. It started to smell a little bit, but i just washed the pads and fabreezed the helmet and it is as good as new. My only complaint is the color scheme, i wish there was an all black version.

Hi, I would like to buy the Mavic Plasma Helmet. Do you have stock for white/white colour for this item? Can it be send to Malaysia? Tq.

Responded on

Hey Keunnel,
This particular helmet is no longer available in the white/white. We have sold out of it.
Additionally we're not able to send Mavic products outside of the US. Take a look at the "Help Center" linked below and you'll be able to find that sort of info really easily.
If there is anything else you need please let us know.

Might be small but seems heavy

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I find that this helmet seems quite heavy and that surprised me. The fit in the large size was just fine for me though I normally would be in a medium. I agree that the visor is rather small and essentially non-functional from what I can tell. I am not very happy with this purchase though will use it for commuting and other shorter rides.

Careful with the size!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have 56 cm. I ordered the medium size according to the chart but when I tried the first time it fits but was no comfortable. I feel some pressure on the sides. It was very little but in a long ride I was sure it was going to feel very bad. I cut part of the pad at the level it was tight like you see in the picture and it is perfect now. Will be good if you can take pieces out of the pad instead of cut them.
I´m sure 56 cm is the limit on this helmet. If you have bigger head go for the Large.

By the way I cut both sides. Those few millimeters really make the difference for me.

Larger visor please!

Crazy inaccurate sizing chart from Mavic

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

So, the helmet looks pretty cool (though seems a little more mushroomy in person than it does in pictures). And I appreciate the reflective accents for riding near cars when it gets dark. But Mavic's size chart people were drunk when they did their measuring. The Medium is supposed to fit 54-59cm heads. I used a really accurate, soft/flexible metric sewing tape measure and measured my head SIX freaking times to be sure to get a perfect average to not have to deal with returns (and couldn't find the helmet locally to try in person). In no measurement was I ever above 56cm, so there was at least a 3cm margin of error. Well, when I got the helmet, I couldn't even get the helmet fully onto my head. It wasn't just tight, it wouldn't even go down all the way. And I have a pretty smooth shaved head with no weird bumps.

Anyway, the sizing fiasco gave me a chance to examine it more closely than my obsessive online research. While it's nice, it could use some more refinement. The Ergo Hold System seems a little flimsy and plasticy, and might get annoying on longer, sweaty rides. And the visor plugs/holes are REALLY tight. If you plan on swapping the visor on and off regularly, you should probably plan on the tabs breaking and needing replacements every few months. I sent the helmet back, and went with a Lazer Genesis. Much happier.

I'll give it 2 stars, just to be generous for some snazzy looks.

If you do order this helmet, though, be sure to add 3-4cm to your measurement.

My son loves his Mavic Plasma Helmet. ...

My son loves his Mavic Plasma Helmet. Unfortunately he has crashed multiple times, requiring 4 or 5 new helmets. Does Mavic offer a warranty for cracked helmets?

Best Answer Responded on

The helmet is designed to crack/crush under the forces created by the crash. What you seem to be saying here is that the helmet has actually done its job, not that it was a faulty product. I don't know of any helmet manufacturers that offer a warranty for a helmet cracked during an accident.

A bike helmet is designed to spread the energy of an impact over space and time. The hard outer shell works like a shield for the skull and distributes the blow across a larger surface area. By crushing and cracking, the inner liner attenuates impact energy, that is, it extends the hit over a longer period of time. Six milliseconds, say, instead of two. Helmet experts call it "slowing the blow," and it can turn a lethal fall into a survivable one.

Great article here with more info if you're interested: http://www.bicycling.com/senseless/index.html

Please don't take this the wrong way, I am not criticizing here at all, but if it was my son (and I have two that ride) I'd be more concerned with the style of riding, bike handling skills and/or chosen terrain that is creating these serious crashes rather than the cost of a new helmet.

How accurate is the sizing on this helmet?...

How accurate is the sizing on this helmet? I am slightly over 57cm, which would place me in either medium or the low end of a large. Anyone own this helmet with the same measurement as me? And if so, what size did you get and how is the fit? Thanks.

Wrong sizing... the Helmets are too small.. so I recommend you to order it in Size L.

Responded on

Hi, My head measures 24.34 inches or 61.82 centimeters. In the generic size chart of Mavic says that L is up to 61 cm, and I don't How accurate it is. The issue lies in that it is very difficult to find XL of this Helmet. Do you think that a size L will be fine for me. Thanks

Might have saved my life

I bought one of these in mid-July 2013 to replace a Bell Volt helmet that was four years old. I was very impressed with the fit as I had always worn Bell previously and wished that I had made the switch earlier as I felt that it had a close, yet still comfortable fit on my larger head.

On August 6, I touched wheels with a long-time riding partner and lost control of my bike at 21 mph. During my fall I went off the back of my bike, hitting the ground and my head snapped back hard enough to knock myself out. I got a pretty good concussion and spent the night in the hospital for observation. The inside of the helmet foam fractured in several places accepting the energy from the impact but interestingly the exterior was still in remarkably good shape. I was extremely lucky in that my other injuries were relatively minor.

I had worn this helmet probably only 10 times before the accident, but given what I know now,I am certain that it saved me from a much worse injury and I think it protected me better than my Volt would have based on the fit, especially in the rear. While waiting for my hospital discharge papers I called and ordered a replacement! Love this helmet!!!

Really Nice

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Made the move from a (very) old E2. I bought this online without having ever tried on a Mavic, based on their product description and sizing chart, and it fits really well. Combined weight and fit, I can barely notice I'm wearing a helmet.

I ride solely XC mtb now, and their Ergo Fit/Ergo Hold design really locks this helmet down on my head. I don't notice any movement as I'm bouncing through a trail.

I guess if your head is the right shape, this helmet is well worth the investment, and doubly so with the discount at Backcountry.

Awesome Helmet!!!

I bought this helmet in part because a friend of mine showed to me. I was mesmerised by the looks of it and how cool it is. I decided to bought one but then decided to bought a second one on different color based on how great this helmet really is. You can use it for MTB because it came with a visor or just only for road cycling. It is a very durable helmet and very comfortable too.

Awesome Helmet!!!
