Mavic designed the Plasma Helmet for folks who like to do all types of cycling, but don't want to have to spring for a helmet unique to each discipline. The Mavic Plasma Helmet caters to the lightweight, well-ventilated needs of typical road cyclists as well as the rough and tumble durability and practicality that your average hard-core cross-country rider will expect.
Most importantly, they have devoted a ton of effort on making this the most comfortable helmet you'll try on all year. First Mavic looked at optimizing the actual shape of the helmet. They conducted cranial mapping tests to make sure that their helmet shapes closely match typical head shapes with pressure points and contours identified and accounted for. The interior shape of the helmet consequently flows along with the curves of the skull. But, since even with a mound of data, there are still variances, their Ergo Hold System allows for as much as 6 centimeters of one-handed, on-the-fly size adjustment. For the final touches on fit perfection, as well as excellent moisture management, Mavic has included their Ergo Fit Pro Pad. It might not seem like much when you look at it, but the Ergo Fit Pro Pad is a low density, open cell foam that wicks water from the skin and transports it to where it can evaporate.
After taking care of comfort, Mavic took a hard look at what they could do for the exterior of the helmet to improve aerodynamics and durability. First, they fashioned a sleek profile that has a low volume construction. Then looking toward ventilation, Mavic developed their Ergo Protec Alutex reinforcement, which makes it possible for them to build in huge vents in the front without compromising any of the helmet's ability to protect you in a crash. The aggressive shape keeps you aero while channeling the wind through the vents helping you to stay cool and comfortable. Finally, with a thoughtful nod to those of you will be using this helmet on the trails, Mavic has included a removable visor and plugs.
The Mavic Plasma Helmet has been given reflective highlights to give you that extra level of protection in case you are caught out after dark. Available in Black, Silver Metallic and White Pearl, you’ll be sure to find a size that fits you among their Small, Medium and Large options.
Low-density, open-cell foam pulls moisture away while higher-density foam provides pressure-free support

This helmet and I did not have the love-at-first-sight relationship I have experienced with other helmets. I first ordered a size small, which I have worn in every other helmet I have owned, and I couldn't even get it on my head with the retainer opened all the way up; it was like a child's helmet. I moved up to a size medium, and I still wasn't altogether sure I would hang onto it; it fits larger than other helmets I have worn and definitely for a rounder noggin. I also found that it hit farther up on my head than my old helmet, like the helmet bowl itself was shallower. I decided dorkiness be damned and I would give it a shot anyway, and I'm glad I did. Things I love: - The interior padding is the most comfortable of any helmet I've ever worn - The retainer system and tightening dial are superbly designed, very secure and easy to adjust one-handed - It looks equally at home with or without the visor - The straps have D-rings to help the material pivot, so they fit flat against my face instead of twisting and bunching up
Things I could live without: - It's a little on the heavy side for this price point of helmet, but not uncomfortably so - The visor has a couple holes for ventilation, and the sun hits me in the eyes sometimes - The strap has a tendency to loosen itself from time to time - I feel like my noggin is in-between sizes; I think I would be happier with the fit if my head were a little bigger
Overall, a nice looking, very safe and secure feeling, solid high-end helmet for road or mountain. I would recommend to my cycling friends.
Bought the SLR version of this helmet in a small but it was too small in the actual head. When this came up in a medium I had to give it a go. While it is on the heavy side of helmets my head feels secure, comfortable, its well vented and easily adjustable. This was my first ride with the helmet and i am looking forward to a warm weather ride to see how well the vents work. 4 stars is merely for the weight aspect of the helmet.
I wanted a helmet to cover me for putting in the miles on the road and trail riding. I didn't want to go down the pathway of two different helmets, and would rather a bit more coverage and protection than the lighter, more minimalist road helmets. The Plasma is perfect for this application, and looks good doing it. Ventilation is paramount - it is regularly >100F during summer where i live and the Plasma is extremely well ventilated. I don't think i have a particularly oval or round head and it fits me the best of any helmet i have found to date. Sizing is perhaps a touch small. If in doubt, go up.
I loved the look of the helmet. When I got the first one, it was too small (even though my head fit within the listed medium range). I exchanged it for the large, which sort of fit, albeit with side-to-side wobble. The problem was that the helmet was so heavy that the awkward fit was magnified.
Even though I loved the looks and ventilation, weight and poor fit forced me to return it...
I got this helmet to replace my top of the line UVEX which replaced my top of the line Giro. This helmet is the best by far. I wear a size medium in all 3! And you have got to love the reflective strips on the Mavic!
I agree with other reviews. The sizing isn't correct. I measured my head and ordered the medium, as it was in my range. It's too small. I paid for USPS shipping so it would come faster. Now I'm paying to ship it back, plus paying again to get a size large. The helmet looks nice. I'm not happy that I'm paying an extra $18 to get the correct size when it was the websites incorrect info that lead me to the medium.
this website, and the Mavic website, state that the large has a maximum fit of 63 cm. i tried this on at the retail store and the box the helmet came in says the maximum fit is 61 cm, and it certainly felt like a 61cm.
I gave this three stars because it seems like a high quality helmet. I took two stars off for the misleading sizing claims, which are especially frustrating to me and my fellow big-headed brethren :)
