New name, same game, but with better braking.

While the name is new, the Mavic Ksyrium SLE Wheel System will be largely familiar to any Mavic fans out there, being that it's simply the excellent Ksyrium SLS Wheel System now boasting the Exalith 2 brake track surface. That aside, the SLE set is the same Ksyrium goodness, and given how impressive a set the SLS hoops already are, we call that a good thing. Oh, and the tires are new and improved, as well.

The Ksyrium SLE Wheel System achieves its feathery-light weight thanks mostly to the highly refined rim profile. The inside of the rim is machined using Mavic's ISM 3D technology to relieve any unnecessary material from around the spoke holes, while leaving plenty of meat to resist spoke pull-through. As mentioned, the SLE wheelset uses the same Exalith 2 brake track surface found on the R-Sys SLR and Ksyrium SLR wheelsets. Exalith is a proprietary alloy and texturing treatment that not only reduces wet and dry stopping distances by almost 20%, it increases the service life of both the braking surface and the specially-engineered brake-pads, which are included.

But getting back to that ISM (or InterSpoke Milling) technology: you may be thinking that shaving off so much metal would result in a rim that's flexy, but you'd be forgetting about Mavic's FORE drilling. You see, while most rims are drilled through the outside to establish a spoke bed, Mavic only drills through the inner face of the rim, and adds a threaded insert. Between maintaining the integrity of the rim, and adding the threaded inserts, it yields a rim that's much stiffer than rims that are hundreds of grams heavier.

With all the effort put into lightening the rims, it's only fitting that the Ksyrium SLE gets a carbon-shelled hubset. Enhancing the lightness is an FTS-L freehub, which is built from aluminum, with two stainless steel inserts between the hubshell and the pawls. What that means for you is the lightness of an alloy freehub, with the durability of a steel freehub. The hubs also benefit from Mavic's QRM+ technology, which employs double-sealed low-friction bearings. And they lace up with Zicral spokes, which have proven to be durable under heavier riders, while still being incredibly light.

Another area of improvement for the Ksyrium SLE over last year's SLS system is an entirely new pair of tires. Engineered in-house by Mavic and now produced by the world-renowned rubber masters at Hutchinson, the GripLink dedicated front tire and PowerLink dedicated rear tire are both 25mm-wide and feature new casings and new compounds, making for a completely new and enhanced experience.

The Mavic Ksyrium SLE Clincher Wheel System is sold as a set, with the option of either Shimano/SRAM or Campagnolo freehub bodies. The wheels with their included tires weigh approximate 1935 grams (1395g without the tires). Also included with the wheels are BR601 quick releases, Exalith brake pads, a computer magnet, a multifunction adjustment wrench, and the owner's manual.
