Your bike's BFF.

The Mavic Ksyrium Elite S Wheel System is like a good, trusty friend. Accessible to basically everyone, ready to do whatever for whomever, and never needing much in return. The light, stiff, and good-looking Elite S set can be described similarly, and this year, a new color choice and improved and included rubber make it an even safer bet if you're looking to upgrade your bike's stock wheelset.

So what makes them so great? Starting with the rims, Mavic employed its venerable Maxtal aluminum alloy. Exclusive to Mavic, Maxtal was developed as a more fitting alternative to the more common 6061 aluminum alloy. In comparison, Maxtal provides a higher strength-to-weight ratio and is around 30% more resistant to stress. This strength is further expanded by Mavic's Soude Usine Process or SUP. When the rim is being shaped and welded, this process is responsible for arc welding the rim joint into a seam that's then given a smooth finish. This exclusive process improves wheel balance, eliminates brake shudder, and increases the overall strength and stiffness of the rim.

Where the spoke meets the rim, Mavic uses its Fore technology to eliminate drilling through the rim bed. The process involves pushing down on the lower of the two rim bridges, and then threading the alloy to allow the nipple to thread directly into it. This leaves the the upper bridge untouched, and accordingly, it increases the wheel's rigidity by 20% and makes it four times more resistant to fatigue. Through its patented Inter Spoke Milling (think of those little ridges along the rim from spoke to spoke), Mavic was able to reduce rotational weight and balance the rigidity. Additionally, the wheels are laced with 18/20 bladed spokes. And for an extra aerodynamic benefit, the wheels have varied rim depths at 22mm up front and 25mm at the rear. This design plan is typically exclusive to far more expensive wheelsets, as it significantly reduces drag by increasing laminar airflow.

Moving to the hubs, Mavic used its Isopulse lacing pattern and flange design. Increasing the dish amounts to a superior balance and spoke tension. Isopulse requires radial drive-side lacing and a two-cross non-drive side lacing. When you look at the flanges of the rear hub, you'll notice that the drive side is oversized and circular in contrast with the non-drive's five-point flange. Not only does this system increase rigidity, but it also improves stability. And contributing to their smooth ride, the Elites spin on Mavic's fully-adjustable QRM+ bearings, and the freehub uses a 100% aluminum design that's been complemented by stainless steel inserts between the pawl and hub body.

Aside from the new color option, the Ksyrium Elites get notably upgraded rubber, too. Now made by the French rubber masters over at Hutchinson, the tires have new compounds, new casings, and are widened out to 25mm over last-year's 23s. The dedicated front GripLink tire and dedicated rear PowerLink tire team up to extract the best handling and ride possible from the Elites, and the results won't disappoint.

The Mavic Ksyrium Elite S Clincher Wheel System is available in one size, with a SRAM/Shimano 11-speed-compatible freehub, and in the colors Black or Red. Included with the set are tires, BR301 quick-releases, a multi-function adjustment wrench, and the owner's manual.
