Throughout its storied history, Mavic has been called both incredibly inventive and stubbornly traditional, and the Ksyrium Disc Clincher Wheelset demonstrates both tendencies. After deeming the advent of disc brakes for road as a trend worth embracing, Mavic took the rim profile from its staid classic, the Ksyrium, and made it disc-compatible. Like its rim brake sibling, the Ksyrium Disc suits endurance riders and self-sponsored cyclists who log considerable training miles to get ready for weekend racing. It's a wheelset that's durable enough to handle being ridden regularly on inconsistent roads or on the occasional gravel bike path but stiff enough for punchy rollers or long climbs.
The welded S6000 aluminum Mavic uses to construct the 25mm-deep rims gives them the type of lightness you'll want for an everyday wheel, along with the durability to take on miles of weather-beaten shoulders, chip-sealed side roads, and the rare smooth stretch of freshly-paved tarmac. When you need to slow down, the disc brakes react consistently and dependably, engaging virtually instantly through a mix of weather and road conditions. Though both hubs come with standard quick-release skewers, Mavic gives you the option to swap out the front quick-release bolt with a 15mm thru-axle for added stiffness.
Twenty-four bladed, straight-pull steel spokes link the reliable aluminum rims to Mavic's workhorse QRM hubs, with the front wheel's spokes laced radially and the rear arranged in Mavic's Isopulse pattern. Isopulse refers to Mavic's use of two-cross and radial lacing on the rear wheel, with radial on the drive side and two-cross on the non-drive side to balance the load of disc braking.
The sealed bearing QRM hubs the Ksyriums are built with lack the on-bike micro-adjustability of their pricier QRM+ counterparts, but they're designed with the same tight internal clearance for a stiff, smooth ride. They also feature Mavic's FTS-L stainless steel reinforcements at the contact area between the pawl and hub body for a better strength-to-weight ratio throughout the hub. Mavic includes single-compound 25mm Yksion tires with a 120 TPI as a versatile all-around tire to start you out on these wheels, along with BR101 quick-release skewers and rim tape.
