Description

Give Jack Frost the boot

Riding in the winter is invigorating. Fresh, lung-clearing clean air. A crisp breeze. Frozen feet. Well, two out of three isn't bad. Mavic knows that you value every second you can get outside on your bike and to that end they have designed a shoe worthy of the elements. The Mavic Frost shoe is a boot cover and cycling shoe built into one piece for optimal flexibility and comfort for your cold weather rides.

Just because they are "off-season" cycling shoes, doesn't mean that Mavic compromised in design and construction. In fact, it used the same Energy Composite Outsole, a light, thin, and stiff sole used in its entry-level race line. Added to this sole is the Ergo Fit 2D insole. This pre-shaped composite insole features arch support as well as a high density heel cradle so that your foot doesn't slip and slide inside the shoe. The uppers are constructed from synthetic leather with a waterproof Gore-Tex membrane. A few mesh inserts have been added to help your foot breathe so that sweat won't chill your feet. The mid-height ankle gusset is neoprene. The flexible and water-resistant neoprene allows your ankle freedom of movement so that you won't feel like you are trying to pedal in ski boots. The waterproof uppers and ankle gusset combine to keep the water out and the warmth in so that you won't need to add boot covers over the top.

Finally, the shoes secure with hook and loop straps. Sure, Mavic could've used their ratcheting buckle system, but it's about the details. And, when you are wearing heavy winter gloves, the last thing you want to do is try to squeeze the ratchet release.

The Mavic Frost shoes weight in at 400grams for a size 8.5.  They are available in whole and half sizes from 6.0 to 12.5. They come in Black/silver.

Surprisingly warm and waterproof

Have these for a month now. Wish I had purchased winter shoes many seasons ago. Sure, toe covers are helpful down to 40-45 degrees. I also have a pair of Giro neoprene shoe covers, and they are warm down to about 30 degrees, but they cause my feet to sweat, and that perspiration, especially at the toes and ankles, makes for a cold ride after an hour. These Mavic Frosts, however, are not only insulated, but allow your perspiration to escape. I have now ridden in upper 20's for two hours and my toes are warm with a pair of thick wool socks (DeFeet Blaze). On warmer days in the upper 30s, I am good with a thinner wool sock (DeFeet Classico). My toes arrive home dry. I found the ankle enclosure easy to adjust, but it was stiff on the first ride, and has since loosened up comfortably. I recently rode in a 36 degree steady rain, and the shoes are really waterproof. The sole is thicker than my Zxelliums, but the shoes are comfortable for 2 hour rides. They come with screws for the cleats, but unlike the Zxellium sole which is thinner, standard Look screws work just fine. I did order 1/2 size larger for use with thick wool socks. For me that works just fine. The toe box is a bit larger than the toe box on the Zxelliums anyway, so you might get by with your normal size. Will update when colder weather arrives. In the past my winter riding was limited by cold toes or cold, clammy feet. Not anymore. And it is a lot simpler to just tighten the velcro straps and the ankle collar before heading out.
