The wintertime cycling jacket debate is a common one. How much jacket is too much? What if it's not enough? What if the sun comes out on my ride? What if it goes away? These and more are variables that make picking the right winter jacket tricky, which is why we appreciate do-it-all winter pieces like the Mavic Espoir Thermo Jacket.

The Espoir Thermo has just enough insulation to keep you warm on some of your coldest rides (especially if you layer properly), yet just enough breathability and flexibility to not make you sweat excessively or feel encumbered. The jacket is made of a material that Mavic calls Ride Wick Warm on its interior, which does just what it says it does: keeps you warm while wicking away moisture to keep you drier, and thus warmer. Outside, the Espoir employs Warm Shell, a nearly-windproof polyester softshell material that also insulates for cold-weather riding. Mavic's Ergo Cuffs are comfortable and offer excellent movement without giving up their seal on your wrists. There's a zippered chest pocket and three rear pockets, and there are light-reflective details about the jacket to boost your visibility at night.

The Mavic Espoir Thermo Jacket comes in five sizes, from Small to XX-Large, and in two colors: Folio/Black and Bright Red.

Fit isn't right

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

Length was great, as was the fit through the arms, but I found the fit through the shoulders and chest a bit off. A little bulkier than expected. Once you get going, it keeps you pretty warm. Relatively water resistant. Don't get caught in a down pour, but handles lighter rain well.
