Mavic Espoir Jersey - Long Sleeve - Men's $99.95
Safety and versatility for cool-weather base miles.
If you're anything like us, the prospect of training through the cold, snowy winters in climates like our hometown of Park City, Utah, doesn't always appeal. Riding in fall and early spring, however, is a must. The seasonal changes, crisp air, slow mornings, and long dusks: it's hard to beat the romance of that atmosphere as motivation to accumulate those all-important base miles. The Mavic Espoir Long Sleeve Jersey shines in these three-season conditions, offering a blend of moisture management, wind resistance, and layering versatility that we're hard-pressed to identify in any similarly-priced offering.
The Espoir's inclusion of Mavic's proprietary Warm Tech fabric means that you receive a stand-alone wind barrier and outer layer for cool conditions. The Espoir boasts wind permeability of less-than 50mm per second at 54km per hour, required protection for blustery spring mornings. As for temperature, Mavic claims the Espoir will keep you spinning comfortably between 32 degrees and 54 degrees Fahrenheit. We find that this jersey gets a little too warm if the thermometer tops 50 on a sunny afternoon in late fall, but it's a great complement for those sub-40 days. Still, even if you sweat a bit on a climb, the soft, brushed liner effectively manages moisture so you won't freeze on the descent.
We'd be remiss if we didn't mention the small, thoughtful details that went into the Espoir Long Sleeve Jersey. These include the elastic waist and tapered wrists, which keep out the wind and ensure a comfortable fit; three back pockets, for hauling handfuls of energy-rich candy corn (our favorite fall riding fuel); and the reflective highlights, which improve your longevity in the low-light conditions of non-summer commutes and early, late, or overcast rides.
Finally, a note on versatility: We think of the Espoir as a transformational catalyst for the other elements of our cycling wardrobe. Combine it with a wind vest and you have a virtually wind-proof top; combine it with a cycling jacket and you're geared to enjoy a winter wonderland. Go ahead and indulge your inner mad scientist, because the Espoir's slim fit and tapered cuffs means it plays nicely with other layers, eliminating unnecessary bulk.
The Mavic Espoir Long Sleeve Jersey is available in seven sizes from XX-Small to XX-Large in the colors Black and Folio.
