If you've been waiting to take the plunge into the world of deep dish rims but aren't sold on the reliability and braking power of full carbon, the Mavic CXR Ultimate 60 Clincher Wheelset is worth a close look. While it may at first be overshadowed by its full-carbon, tubular siblings, the CXR 60 C is not to be dismissed as simply a budget option in the CXR family. It comes with a few advantages of its own, not limited to its wallet-friendly aluminum construction, all while delivering aerodynamic advantages almost identical to its tubular siblings.

Mavic trusts its own Maxtal aluminum in the initial rim construction, a material that sets itself apart from other aluminum alloys with its higher strength-to-weight ratio compared to standard 6061 alloy. It creates rims that are lighter and 30% stronger than 6061 alloy. After Maxtal, Mavic adds a 12k carbon fairing to the rim, shaving extra grams that a full aluminum construction would've added. This blended construction method delivers a rim with all of the aerodynamic advantages of deep dish carbon, along with aluminum's ability to take on daily abuse. The 60mm depth is versatile enough for triathlon, TTs, and criteriums, and they're less unpredictable than the deeper 80mm CXRs when the wind picks up.

The key advantage the CXR 60 Clinchers enjoy over their tubular siblings is Mavic's innovative Exalith II brake track. The textured aluminum surface offers incredible durability and reduces braking distance by 18% compared to conventional alloy braking surfaces in any weather. When combined with the welded rim joints, Exalith II creates a balanced wheel that won't shudder under hard braking forces. Like the rest of the CXR family, the CXR 60 Clinchers employ a NACA-inspired aerodynamic profile, but each model — clincher or tub, 60 or 80mm — features a slightly different profile adapted to its design, wind-tunnel tested and fine-tuned along each of the points of contact between air and rim.

Though the profiling is impressive, Mavic's use of its CX01 blades to seamlessly integrate the wheel and tire is what truly sets the wheelset apart from its less-integrated peers. The system, which snaps in place in the small area between the wheel and tire, smooths laminar airflow around this often troublesome gap, reducing drag and encouraging the air to flow uninterrupted over the entire system.

As you turn the pedals, the wheels roll smoothly on Mavic's hardworking carbon-bodied hubs with aluminum flanges, equipped with Mavic's QRM+ bearings. With an allowance for micro-fine, preload adjustments and narrow tolerances, the bearings promise reliable power transfer and a customizable ride that can be adapted to different conditions. Keeping with the lightweight design, Mavic includes the Force Transfer System Light (FTS-L) feature in the freehub body to reinforce the contact area between the aluminum hub body and the pawls. FTS-L uses two stainless steel inserts to enhance engagement and increase the overall durability of the freehub body.

Sixteen bladed, straight-pull steel spokes lace these hubs to the front rim with radial lacing, while the rear wheel receives 20 spokes with a two-cross drive side and radial non-drive side lacing pattern. Mavic trusts the proven pairing of its Griplink and Powerlink tires to complete the tubular wheel system, constructing both with a luxuriously supple 210 TPI and a nylon breaker to reinforce the tires against road debris. Griplink focuses more on traction, as its name suggests, while Powerlink was constructed with the lowest rolling resistance in mind. In addition to quick-release skewers and brake pads, Mavic includes a valve extender, multi-function adjustment wrench, and user guide.
