At its core, riding a 29in wheel is an affirmation of functionality. You think differently, and you embrace new technology at the face value promise of an elevated standard of ride quality. So why is it that most 29er manufacturers simply take a 26in wheel and make it bigger? Mavic asked the same question, and answered it with the Crossmax ST 29in Wheelset. Built from Mavic's exclusive Maxtal aluminum, and featuring top-shelf proprietary technologies, the Crossmax STs exist on a heightened plane of 29er handling, rigidness, and lightweight speed.

Mavic's Crossmax ST 29in Wheelset was developed with rider experience at the forefront of the design. In fact, the pros from teams Orbea, Cannondale, and Luna were integral in the research and development process. With their input, Mavic was able to make the 20/24 spoke ST wheelset a rigid, but comfortable, wheelset that wants to accelerate and sprint out of the corners, and it doesn't hurt that this characteristic is aided by the patented low inertia ISM rim design; the 19mm wide rim's lower bridge is machined between the spoke holes. This process allows greater weight savings, and thus a lower rotational weight for enhanced climbing and overall speed. The rims' rigidity and durability are further accentuated by Mavic's Fore technology. This is a drilling process for spoke attachment that only pierces one of the two rim walls. Mavic claims that this system makes the rim four times more resistant to fatigue and 20% stiffer. What we know is that the design makes the perfect, aperture-free platform for a UST tubeless system.

Mavic's technological innovations aren't limited to just the rim, they extend throughout every component of the wheelset. The hubs use a four pawl system that works two by two to promote faster engagement and a more efficient energy transmission. Additionally, the hubs use Mavic's top-shelf QRM+ cartridge bearings that feature a protecting double seal, and a simple to use micro-adjustability system for on-the-fly precision adjustments according to your riding conditions.

This wheelset is part of Mavic's MP3 extended warranty program. The acronym stands for Mavic Product Protection Plan, and it provides you with two years of almost unlimited no-fault protection from Mavic. More details can be found on the MP3 website. Please note that MP3 coverage must be purchased within 5 days of the date that you receive your wheels. Contact one of our customer service representatives for the retailer and product codes that you'll need to register your wheels on the Mavic MP3 site. You'll also need the serial numbers that you'll find on your wheels. The cost for this coverage is approximately 8% of the retail cost of the wheels.

The Mavic Crossmax ST 29in Wheelset is both UST tubeless and tube compatible, and accepts only six bolt ISO standard disc rotors. This wheelset is is available in the color Black, and the freehub body accepts Shimano and SRAM 8-, 9-, and 10-speed cassettes. The front wheel comes standard as a 15mm thru-axle and the rear with a 135x9mm quick-release configuration.  Adapters are included for a rear 142x12mm thru-axle.  Adapters are sold separately for a front quick-release and 20mm thru-axle options along with a 135x10mm thru-axle rear configuration.

2 broken axles in 2 years

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have had the Mavic Crossmax STs on my Niner Air 9 hard-tail for almost two years now. The axle in the rear wheel has broken twice. The first time was about a month after I bought the bike, the second time after another 18 months. For the first broken axle, Mavic took over a month to get the parts to my LBS. For the second broken axle there has been no response from Mavic in over two months; I've given up waiting. The wheels have stayed perfectly true. For reference, I am 6'2, 165 lbs, old, and ride trails somewhat conservatively.

I am looking at the Mavic Crossmax ST 29in...

I am looking at the Mavic Crossmax ST 29in Wheelset, but I don't know if it will work on my Specialized 29er, which has SRAM 1x11 casette and RShox Pike fork. Can anyone clarify this ? or recommend other comparable wheelsets ?

This wheel set can be converted to 15mm or 20mm in front and any axle variant in the back. The only thing is you will have to purchase the Mavic XD driver off our website to except the SRAM 11 Spd business.

I hope this helps and if you need anything else please let me know,

Any thoughts on using these on a disk...

Any thoughts on using these on a disk equipped cyclocross bike? Are the rims too wide?

These should work as long as the rear spacing is 135mm (mtb standard) on the rear axle. Some disc cross bikes are being made with 130mm (road standard) spacing

I'm wondering if there's a front axle...

I'm wondering if there's a front axle conversion for these that uses the 9mm through axle like the DT Swiss RWS?

Hey Justin,

Unfortunately Mavic does not offer any axle conversion for the DT Swiss RWS skewers.

These are great wheels!!!

For the price and weight, these wheels are hard to beat. I've been hammering on mine for 2 seasons. I've only broken 1 spoke due to a branch nub poking out of the trail. After I replaced the spoke, the rear wheel required minimal truing. I've done a variety of trail riding on these and have even taken my 429c on the dirt jumps up at the Canyons in Park City with no sign of fatigue. May not be the lightest wheelset out there but they are strong! I'm about 225 lbs and have barely done anything to them in regards to service. My only gripe is that replacement spokes can be tricky to source from an LBS.

I am riding a 2011 Stumpjumper 29r, (XXL)...

I am riding a 2011 Stumpjumper 29r, (XXL) and just broke the rear stock DT520 SL. Looking to upgrade to a stronger wheelset for a 6'6'' 250lb. Hub requirements 20mmx105mm Front & 10mmx135mm Rear. The Crossmax looks to fit, but the reviews are mixed on Mavic. What do you recommend?

Well, I'm only 5'10" and 190lb, but I've been riding the 26" Crossmax for two seasons on rocky, rooty NW terrain and love them. Haven't had to true them at all. The tubeless setup is super easy (no thru-holes). I think they had problems in years past, up to 2011. I'd buy them again.
