Perfectionism at its finest.

The tech-savvy race fans among us spent the entirety of the 2013 season drooling over the yet-to-be-released prototypes of the Mavic Crossmax Enduro 26in Wheelset. With a string of wins that culminated in the Enduro World Series title being won aboard the French hoops, you'd be right to want to add them to your own ride. The front and rear wheel employ unique rims, which reflect the individual demands placed on the front and rear wheel in an Enduro racing scenario. And as much as these new wheels get our heartrate up, the included Crossmax Charge and Roam tires are equally deserving of your attention. This is a setup that's benefitted from obsessive optimization, and the result begs to be rallied down the gnarliest descents around, before sprinting back to the top to do it again.

Mavic could have taken the easy route and repurposed one of its existing rims for the application, but that just wouldn't be in keeping with the French brand's impeccable record of developing truly cutting-edge product. Accordingly, there's a lot more going on here than you'd expect. First there's the rim, or rims, to be specific. You see, Mavic's engineers realized that particularly in Enduro, the demands on the front and rear wheel are drastically different. That's why they designed a new, 24 hole, 21mm internal width front rim, for a stable tire platform and aggressive cornering. The all-new rear rim is both narrower and lighter than the front, and somewhat counterintuitively, employs only 20 of the Zicral spokes. The Zicral spokes are both stiffer and stronger than traditional stainless spokes, meaning that despite the modest spoke count, the Crossmax Enduro wheelset is not only light, but stiff and responsive. As with Mavic's elite level race wheels, both rims benefit from Inter Spoke Milling, or ISM. This proprietary process removes unnecessary material from around the spoke holes, while leaving plenty of material to retain the rim's strength. The rims' rigidity and durability are further accentuated by Mavic's Fore technology. This is a drilling process for spoke attachment that only occurs on one of the two rim walls. Mavic claims that this system makes the rim four times more resistant to fatigue and 20% stiffer. What we know is that the design makes the perfect, tape-free UST tubeless setup. The result is a strength-to-weight ratio that even many carbon fiber rims struggle to match.

You may be wondering why you want a stronger front wheel, when it's the rear wheel that typically takes the most abuse. The answer is clear when you start watching video footage of Mavic's athletes testing the new Crossmax Enduro. A stiff, wide front wheel enables the leading edge of your bike to track with precision through uneven terrain. By comparison, a softer flexing rear wheel allows the bike to track straighter in turns, by deflecting slightly, instead of throwing the bike sideways when encountering the myriad forms of trail debris you'll undoubtedly cross. It's a phenomenon that's long been known in elite racing circles, and we're thrilled to see this concept making its way to production wheelsets.

Mavic's technological innovations aren't limited to just the rim, they extend throughout every component of the wheelset. The hubs use a four pawl system that works two by two to promote faster engagement and a more efficient energy transmission. Additionally, the hubs use Mavic's top-shelf QRM+ cartridge bearings that feature a protecting double seal, and a simple to use micro-adjustability system for on-the-fly precision adjustments according to your riding conditions.

While we could wax poetic about the benefits offered by the Crossmax Enduro wheelset, we'd be remiss if we skipped over the included tires. Built on the same philosophy as the wheelset, the Crossmax Enduro tires are optimized for front and rear use, and the variety of tasks those assignments require. The front tire, the Charge, uses a large, supportive UST casing, and a tread pattern that's inspired by one of the winningest Downhill tires of all time. The rear tire, the Roam, maintains the reinforced UST casing, but in a reduced size that saves weight, and with a progressive tread design that blends all-conditions traction with blisteringly fast rolling speeds. Naturally, they're optimized for use with the Crossmax Enduro wheelset, so they'll offer up unreal ride quality that's especially noticeable when you're pushing the limits.

The Mavic Crossmax Enduro 26in Wheelset is both UST tubeless and tube compatible, and accepts only six bolt ISO standard disc rotors. This wheelset is available in the color Black, and the freehub body accepts Shimano and SRAM 8-, 9-, and 10-speed cassettes. The front wheel comes standard with a 15mm thru-axle, which can be converted to a 20mm thru axle with the included endcaps, and the rear options includes endcaps for the use of a standard 135x9mm QR, and 12x142mm thru-axles.
