Cosmic Carbone SLR Carbon Clincher Wheelset

The Mavic Cosmic Carbone SLR Clincher wheels have an aesthetic quality that grabs attention. Though they are beautiful to look at, it's the ride quality that will quickly make these your favorite race day wheels.  A signature wheel in the pro peloton, these carbon and alloy clinchers utilize the top of the line rim and hub technologies for which Mavic is known. The Cosmic Carbone SLR Clinchers take the best qualities from carbon and aluminum and combine them in a responsive and aerodynamic wheel.

Mavic begins the manufacture of the Cosmic Carbone SLR with a Maxtal aluminum rim, and brings it together with a seamless, SUP weld. The brake track is then milled for a smooth finish. The use of a Maxtal rim is a natural choice, given Maxtal's strength to weight ratio and good braking characteristics. Mavic then mills out the space between the spokes on the rim, which reduces rotational weight without sacrificing strength or stiffness. The brake track and rim are finished with the Exalith 2 treatment. Though it may look like a simple matte finish, you'll notice a crescent pattern throughout the brake track. This pattern improves your braking power, in addition to making the rim more durable.

The brilliance of this type of wheel design is that the Maxtal rim takes the daily beating, but the carbon fairing gives you an aerodynamic advantage without the weight penalty you'd incur if the entire wheel were alloy. The 52mm-deep fairing is finished with a 12K weave, and hits a nice midpoint between the just-barely-deep-enough, and the too-deep-to-ride-in-crosswinds.

If your rim is aerodynamic but your hub and spokes act like a windsock, your energy is lost. Mavic improved its hub design to be more aerodynamic on the Carbone SLR wheels, with a flatter construction than lower end offerings. Both hubs use double-sealed, QRM+ cartridge bearings, which are micro-adjustable. For more stability in the rear hub, Mavic uses FTS-L reinforcement between the pawl and hub body; two stainless steel inserts add strength without much weight.

The Rim to Rim spoke design brings the wheel together. The stiff unidirectional carbon fiber reduces the number of spokes needed by wrapping around the hub before meeting the other side of the rim. This reduces the weight while maintaining a stiff feel on descents and under load.

Mavic is expanding its line of wheel-tire system, and included Griplink/ Powerlink front and rear specific clincher tires with the Cosmic Carbone SLR Carbon Clincher Wheelset. The tires are 127 TPI, and will stand up to cobbles while still gripping through the hair-pins.

The Mavic Cosmic Carbone SLR Carbon Clincher Wheels come with BR601 front and rear quick releases, wheelbags, Exalith brake pads, a computer magnet for the front wheel, adjustment wrench, valve extender, rim tape, and user guide. The wheels come in Black with Black tires. They are available with a Campagnolo or Shimano/SRAM freehub body.
