Lightweight training wheels with race day features.

Mavic constructed the Cosmic Carbone SLE Carbon Clincher Road Wheelset with striking similarity to the Carbone SLR. The wheels start with a Maxtal aluminum rim brought together with a seamless SUP weld. The brake track is then milled for a smooth, finish. The use of a Maxtal rim is a natural choice, given the strength to weight ratio and braking ability. Mavic mills out the unused area of the rim between spoke holes to reduce rotational weight without impacting stiffness or durability. The brake track and rim are finished with the Exalith 2 treatment. Though the treatment may look like a simple matte finish, you'll notice a crescent pattern through the entire brake track. This pattern improves braking power and modulation, and increases the durability of the rim even further.

The brilliance of this type of wheel design is that the Maxtal rim takes the daily beating, but the carbon fairing gives you an aerodynamic advantage without the weight penalty you'd incur if the entire wheel were alloy. The 52mm-deep fairing is finished with the same 12K weave as the SLRs, and hits a nice midpoint between the just-barely-deep-enough, and the too-deep-to-ride-in-crosswinds.

If your rim is aerodynamic but your hub and spokes act like a windsock, your energy is lost. Mavic improved its hub design to be more aerodynamic on the Carbone SLR wheels, with a flatter construction than lower end offerings. Both hubs use double-sealed, QRM+ cartridge bearings, which are micro-adjustable. For more stability in the rear hub, Mavic uses FTS-L reinforcement between the pawl and hub body; two stainless steel inserts add strength without much weight.

Bladed, straight pull, steel spokes lace the rims to the hubs in a 16 spoke, radial pattern on the front wheel. The rear wheel uses a radial/two-cross pattern with 20 spokes for a balance of weight and strength.

Mavic is expanding its line of wheel-tire system, and included Griplink/ Powerlink front and rear specific clincher tires with the Cosmic Carbone SLE Carbon Clincher Wheelset. The tires are 127 TPI, and will stand up to cobbles while still gripping through the hair-pins.

The Mavic Cosmic Carbone SLE Carbon Clincher Road Wheelset comes with BR601 front and rear quick releases, wheelbags, Exalith brake pads, a computer magnet for the front wheel, adjustment wrench, valve extender, rim tape, and user guide. The wheels come in Black with Black tires and are available with a Campagnolo or Shimano/SRAM freehub body.

Here's what others have to say...

I don't see a weight listed in the specs. Does anyone know what it might be?

Responded on

Mine weigh in wheels only at 1649g. No tires, skewers.

You don't even notice the weight out on the road. Awesome wheels.

The wheels come with Mavic tires; can all/any other tires be used with these wheels, e.g. when the supplied Mavics wear out is there any reason why I can't replace with Michelin/Conti/etc?

Responded on

You do not have to use Mavic tires on these. You can use any road clincher tire.

I´ve just bought it and are great! But I need to replace the front wheel carbon plane. Does it is possible? It has a little scratch and is a little broken. Where I can find the replacement part? Thank you

We can provide you with contact info for Mavic. Please email our with your order number and a photo of the damage.

could i use other brake pad like swiss green brake pad, or i only could use the Exalith brake pad? thanks

Hey there Roy, while it is an alloy rim, the coating that Mavic uses is only designed for the Exalith pads. The wheel set comes with a set for front or rear.

Solid Aero CF Wheel Option

Solid performing wheelset if you want the dependability and durability of an aluminum wheel but aero and look of a CF. The whining brake squeal of the Exalith coating is all but gone after 3 weeks of riding. Breaking performance is equal to Mavic Ksyrium Elite all aluminum wheels. The valve extenders are a bit of work to get used to, but can easily replace with a longer valve as a workaround.

Solid Wheelset

  • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

I am a big Mavic fan. I have a set of Ksyrium SL that are 10 years old and still going strong and true. I also have a set of Crossmax SLR's for my mountain bike. Anyway I was looking for a new bombproof set of wheels that had excellent braking. The Cosmic Carbone SLE really peaked my interest with the black Exalith braking surface. Initially the braking surface squeals horribly and embarassingly. I bought the Jagwire brakepad toe-in tool to help with with toe in. That made all the difference. Braking is so much better than standard aluminum rims and I suspect much better than a carbon braking surface. Some downsides. The spoke nipples are internal, water can get inside the carbon faring and can be difficult to get out. Durability I suspect like most things mavic will be amazing. The weight is also fairly competitive when compared to other carbon clincher wheelsets. I am happy with the purchase and would recommend this to someone looking for a true all purpose wheelset.

Does the brake track stay black over time or does it wear down to silver eventually?

Responded on

It will stay black forever if all you do is ride in the dry. However, riding in the rain with any sort of road debris will start wearing off the Exalith coating, I bet if given another year the coating would be totally worn to silver. I probably ought to revise my review now that I have some miles on the wheels. Mavic has a hidden disclaimer about the Exalith coating and riding in wet weather saying that it will wear off and is considered normal wear and tear, but that it doesn't affect braking performance.
