We are well aware of the benefits provided by a well-designed pair of carbon clinchers. The low weight, stiffness, solid aerodynamics, and reliability continue to be the reasons that we mount them up on our machines for both training and racing. But, there's always that one lingering cloud that's been hanging over the carbon clincher since it was first introduced. It's called heat dissipation, or lack thereof, that plagues those of us running these wheels. Special brake pads, rim treatments, etc. have attempted to remedy the issue, but none have seemed to prove effective in the long run. Well, Mavic's new Cosmic Carbone 40 C was built specifically to address this, as it effectively manages heat buildup using an entirely new rim composition.
Mavic knew that a rim treatment alone wouldn't effectively dissipate heat at the rim, which is what other manufacturers have continually relied on for years to help mitigate the issue. Instead, Mavic rethought the construction of the rim itself, using a blend of aluminum, carbon, and a proprietary resin called TgMAX.
Seeing as Mavic is world-renowned for its dependable aluminum wheels, it makes sense that its engineers would rely on their extensive expertise in the manufacturing and shaping of this material as a means for building the foundation of its new wheelset. Aluminum has long been known to both dissipate heat quickly and resist high temperatures much better than carbon, making it the optimal material to start with. As such, the skeleton, or real structure of the Carbone 40 C, is a lightweight aluminum hoop, or 'rim bed insert,' that enhances structural stiffness, holds air pressure better than full-carbon, and resists brake pulsing. Additionally this bed wraps up on either side, creating a 'U-shaped' sidewall design that adds to the wheel's overall durability.
Mavic then wraps its lightweight proprietary core material and aluminum bed, by hand, with its 3k carbon layers. These layers are applied manually in order to ensure that the proper positioning of each layer of carbon is achieved. This process is where the TgMAX comes into play, as this 'Maximum Glass Transition Temperature' technology consists of laying up several types of resins and affixing them to the carbon structure with a proprietary heat-treatment process. Then the wheel gets placed in a mold and is subjected to high pressure and a cycle of 'cooking' that permanently bonds the carbon/resin to the aluminum bed. Once removed from the mold, spoke holes are drilled through the inner rim wall only, keeping the structural integrity of the aluminum bed intact. And while this drilling alone would normally create a stress point at the drilling surface, Mavic added durable aluminum inserts to secure the wheel's spokes.
Mavic says that this construction process was three years in the making. Well, it's paid off, as extensive lab and field testing -- using hundreds of riders of varying weights and riding styles -- proved that this resin compound, wrapped around an aluminum bed, efficiently diffuses heat buildup at the rim surface much better than carbon-only rim designs.
Similar to the Ultimate, the Carbone 40 C relies on the highly versatile 40mm rim profile. This wheelset was built with a blunt, 19mm-wide bed, and it uses 20 front and rear steel spokes that have been radially laced throughout -- minus the 2-crossed rear drive side pattern.
The Cosmic Carbone 40 C front wheel runs on Mavic's super-smooth QRM+ bearing system. This micro-adjustable bearing preload system is also found on the rear hub, allowing the rider to dial in the hubs without removing the wheels from the bike. The rear wheel also uses Mavic's FTS-L system to reinforce the contact area between the pawl and hub body. This system uses two stainless steel inserts in order to create more stability and greater efficiency in the lightweight, aluminum freehub body.
Mavic didn't want to sacrifice ride quality by running just any old tires on these wheels. Expanding the line of its wheel-tire system, Mavic has included its Pro Griplink/ Power link front- and rear-specific clincher tires with the wheelset. With a 127 TPI and incredible cornering capabilities, made possible through its dual-compound construction, these tires are ready to handle any terrain that's thrown their way.
The Mavic Cosmic Carbone 40 C Clincher Wheelset weighs around 1545g without tires. They include BR601 titanium quick-release skewers and are available with either a SRAM/Shimano 10-/11-speed or Campagnolo 11-speed compatible freehub body.

Freshbikes shop ride, the hills of Arlington, VA, Tuesday night, May 13. Mavic is there with sets for riders to test. I put a set of these on. Only downside is I had to give em back after the ride. That, and -- forgetting I had these on my bike and was braking down a long hill -- I swear I smelled something burning (likely my imagination). I have a set of Ksyrium Elite S and there was a noticeable difference; the 40s were smooth and just seemed to 'roll.' I'm on a caad9 and with alloy rims I feel every nugget of love the road has to offer, but these smoothed things out nicely. And, yea, they look good.
