With a little less carbon and a little more weight than its top-shelf brother, the Fury, the Mavic Chasm XC Race Shoe provides top-shelf performance without costing an arm and a leg. The Chasm dishes out all the thrills with a carbon fiber outsole, a synthetic microfiber upper, and Mavic's ultralight and ultra-reliable Ergo-lite Ratchet closure, but leaves with enough cash left over to refuel at the pub.

Mavic started with a stretch-resistant micro fiber upper. Then it built in a thermo polyurethane (TPU) frame they call the Energy Frame Plus. This gives the shoe a bit more shape while keeping the upper soft and comfortable. You'll see this wrapping the shoe from the arch on the inside to the ratchet on the outside.

The large ratchet buckle is easy to use for fine adjustments, even with gloves on. The strap has deeper valleys between the teeth for better, more confident grip. The Ergo Strap Carbon runs through integrated, two-position nylon lace guides for both better fit and smoother action. The Chasm comes with an Energy Lock heel and an integrated, wrap-around Ergo Tongue for a secure fit, cool, breathable comfort, and freakishly light weight.

The chasm uses a Ergo Fit 3D insole. Not only is the insole is three-dimensional, rather than two, but the three different density materials give some cushion on the top layer, a crushable bottom layer, and added shape from the heel cup through the arch.

Mavic uses a uni-directional carbon fiber outsole for the Chasm. They still employ the Contagrip rubber, but have replaced the toe spike screws with short studs that sit flush with the rest of the sole and add a little toe grip in dry conditions.

Mavic Fury Shoes are packaged with removable traction studs. The shoes come in both whole and half sizes from 5 to 13. Claimed weight is 370g for a size 8.5.

Wish I had bought sidis

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs small

Ordered these last summer, mostly because they were on sale and looked cool. Probably not the best criteria for buying shoes. Compared to my sidi road shoes they are narrow in the forefoot, wide in the ankle, and a little shorter. So if you have narrow feet and big canckles these will probably fit well. On rougher descents they sometimes make my feet hurt but most of the time they are liveable.

Stiffness, weight, ventilation are all really good.

After over a season of use, the lugs have started to come off the bottom and I think they are the cause of a clicking I get while pedaling. I've changed cleats and bikes and pedals and it is still there, I think from the plate wearing down above the cleat and allowing some play. Also the ratchets have stopped releasing smoothly.

Would have liked these to fit and hold up better because they are a nice shoe. Likely going to dominators or spiders next season.

Great Value for a Training/Racing Shoe

I've been training and cross racing in these for several months, and they've been great. Overall a good value. You can see my more in depth review and photos here: http://atlantapeloton.com/blog/2015/9/2/mavic-chasm-review

Comfortable, stiff, well ventilated

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I had a pair of Mavic shoes that got too stinky to wear. Ordered this pair as a replacement, and they are just as great as my old pair. The last fits my feet really well, and they are both stiff and well ventilated.
I use them for racing cross, and the latch system works well for adjusting on the fly, and also doesn't undo when you inevitably crash.
I had tried the Giro Sica (Code) but found them really uncomfortable, and not that well made. The latch also would come undone at random points -- in a cross race, looking down and seeing your shoe undone is the worst! These shoes are much better made than the Giros, and the latch works much better.

Not sure about these:

I really want to like these shoes, but with this happening, I do not think I can.

The cord on the middle strap is fraying and the cord is ready to break. I purchased these in Jun and this is my 7 month using them.

Pesonally, I do not feel these are worth the price based on the quality. I have had shoes half the price that have lasted twice as long. Possibly the last time I try a pair of shoes with cords on the straps.

Sure they are stiff, feel great, but the cords on the two lower straps may be the downside.

Currenlty trying to warranty via CC, I'll let you know what they say.

Hello CC, no response!!!! Can I get an update!!!

CC is great enough to warranty these shoes. I was going to give them another try since the only issue is the cords connected to the lower and middle straps. But they do not have them in my size anymore.

Pros: Stiff, comfortable both hiking and riding, and good looking

Cons: Strap durability, Mavic is overseas with no 800 number for the US.

Not sure about these:

Is the bottom of the sole rubber or hard...

Is the bottom of the sole rubber or hard plastic? For CX, I like to un-clip and stand on the pedals (candy) heading into a barrier for easy dismount. But my Specialized mtb shoes are too hard and slippery on the bottom so it makes it hard to do. Also, how is the sizing? I wear 44.5 for Shimano road shoes (and for Sidi's). The chart says I should be in size 10 (44) for Mavic. Is this what you would recommend?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

These are rubber on the bottom. They run slightly longer than the Shimano or Sidi shoes, but are also narrower. I personally fit the same size in all 3 because I need the extra width (but the toe box is long.)

Are these US or UK sizes?

The description mentions they come in UK sizing and I wanted to be sure.

I can see how this would be confusing but base your decision off the chart above this is the chart Mavic provided us and it should be true to what you are after.

Is recomend? for spining

Is recomend for spining

Best Answer

Hi Carlos,

These shoes would definitely be appropriate for spinning. The biggest factor in choosing a shoe for spin cycling is to make sure you have the right pedal system. Most Spin bikes use a 2-sided "SPD" or Mountain bike style of pedal. In that case you are good to go. There are a few spin bikes that use "Delta" or "Look-style" cleats, and for that type of spin bike/pedal, this shoe would not fit.
