Money often dictates what level of wheel we choose for our machines, and often the list of 'affordably-priced' wheels is more difficult to sift through than the 'high-end' wheels. Fortunately, the Mavic Aksium Wheels not only keeps the budget conscious satisfied, but maintains the quality and performance we've come to expect from Mavic wheels.
The Aksium rims are constructed from black anodized 6106 aluminum. As in the rest of their aluminum wheel line, Mavic uses UB Control technology to mill the braking surfaces of the rim. The result is improved brake friction and shudder-free stops in almost all weather conditions.
The Aksium wheels feature 20 (front and rear) bladed, straight-pull, steel spokes with brass nipples. Each spoke is equipped with Mavic's Self Lock technology that uses a special shape on the spoke end to make it impossible to loosen when it's on the thread. The design eliminates tension loss, and the wheels stay truer, longer.
The Aksium wheels aren't going to win any weight contests, but Mavic's early and broad dedication to aerodynamics compensates for the extra grams. The 21mm rim profile, low spoke count, and use of bladed stainless steel spokes manage to mitigate much of their beefiness.
The Aksium is substantially less expensive than the Kysrium Elite and Equipe thanks to a combination of small details. Rather than having FORE drilled rims and thread-in spoke grommets, the Aksium rim is a more traditional single-eyelet-style, with the spoke holes penetrating the outer wall of the rim And, while the Aksium uses the identical lightweight FTS-L steel freehub body as the Ksyrium Elite and SL wheels, its sealed bearing hubs lack the on-bike adjustability, although they are fully serviceable and adjustable otherwise.
The Mavic Aksium Wheels is available with white decals and Campagnolo or Shimano/SRAM-compatible freehub bodies. The front wheel weighs 800 grams and the rear 935 grams (total weight 1735 grams). The wheels come with Mavic aluminum quick-release skewers, rim tape, and the user guide.
This wheelset is part of Mavic's MP3 extended warranty program. The acronym stands for Mavic Product Protection Plan, and it provides you with two years of almost unlimited no-fault protection from Mavic. More details can be found on theMP3 website. Please note that MP3 coverage must be purchased within 5 days of the date that you receive your wheels. Contact one of our customer service representatives for the retailer and product codes that you'll need to register your wheels on the Mavic MP3 site. You'll also need the serial numbers that you'll find on your wheels. The cost for this coverage is approximately 8% of the retail cost of the wheels.
Contact area between the pawls and the hub body is reinforced with stainless steel which allows Mavic to use an all-aluminum hub body for reduced weight
Dual-sealed high-quality bearings with C3 tight tolerances for dirt-resistance and high efficiency
Mavic's Self-Lock spoke end system makes it impossible for spokes to loosen so the wheel needs to be trued less than wheels with conventional spokes
Hammer hardening strengthens the rim in the area where the spokes exert the greatest stress to add durability
Milled brake surfaces improve brake friction and eliminate shuddering

These Mavic Aksiums came with tubes and tires. Just install the cassette and you are ready to go. Although not lightweight by any means, for the price I think these are good wheels. Out of the box the wheels were not as true as I would've liked them to be. The front wheel was somewhat wobbly and the rear wheel was just OK.
As others on here have mentioned, the Mavic Aksium is a great training wheel set. Although no lightweight, the durability and quality of these wheels are noteworthy. Weighing in between 175 and 180, I had no problem with these wheels at all despite kicking them around a bit. They are perhaps the least expensive option for running the new 11-speed Shimano and SRAM drivetrains, since not many wheels in this price range are compatible just yet (that should change for '14).
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
This wheel set is amazing for its price. Though it isn't light, it does its job and much more. The spokes tension is high and seems to stay that way. If you're a heavier rider, you may want to look for something else. It only has 20 spokes for both the rear and the front and from what I know, bladed spokes are slightly worse than regular spokes in terms of distributing the weight load. The combination of only 20 bladed spokes in the rear may be not durable if you are over 160 pounds. It comes with tires and tubes so it was ready right out of the box. All in all, a great wheel set for the price
Hi, I have three simple questions about these wheels. 1) I am a heavy rider (230 lbs) and I would like to know if I can ride these wheels. 2) Are these 9-speed or 10-speed or both? How about warranty period and do I deal with you or the manufacturer if there is any?
I'm a clyde and I have a bike which came with Mavic Aksium Race wheels. I rode them for 1,800 miles or so, and finally gave up on them because of broken spokes. To be fair, only one spoke broke, but I was just getting weary of fixing broken spokes on Mavic wheels in general. Long story short, I have done about 3,600 miles total on two sets of Mavics: Aksium Race and Equipes, which are not very different wheels (do your homework, you'll agree), and I just got tired of breaking spokes and paying my LBS to repair them. Now-a-days, I ride on some different wheels (Velocity Deep-Vs, with a higher spoke count), and I'm much happier. Clydes need strong wheels, and Mavic Wheels are designed for light French dudes, not well-fed Americans.
