Aksium One Disc Wheelset

Stepping over into the world of road disc brakes may seem like a big leap, but you needn't break the bank for the sake of the experiment. The Mavic Aksium One Disc Wheelset is a bombproof entry-level disc-ready wheelset that's not too heavy, looks great, and is built on the proven Aksium wheel platform, making it a good call for either training or just to test the disc-brake waters, be it in road or cyclocross.

But don't just think that the Aksium One Disc Wheelset is simply the Aksium One with rotor mounts. The hub shells and flanges take a different shape as they grow to accommodate the extra bolts, and force, of brake rotors, and it's true that the hubs' internals are otherwise identical to the standard One set's, but the rim is actually quite different. For one, as with all of Mavic's high-end alloy rims, it is built with sleeve construction, as opposed to the pin-type construction used on the more basic Aksium Ones. The sleeve construction is more time-consuming but leads to a lighter, stronger, and more balanced rim overall. Being a disc-brake-only set, of course, the sidewalls are not machined for use as a brake track, lending a solid black appearance that we think looks pretty stellar for a wheelset at this price.

That 22mm rim is laced via round black straight-pull stainless steel spokes in a two-cross pattern both up front and in back. The eyeleted spoke holes are hammer hardened to increase the rims' durability, and the rims can handle tires up to 52mm in width. They are connected to hubs that house Mavic's QRM+ high-end bearings and steel axles. The steel freehub body directs your power through Mavic's ultra-reliable FTS-L two-pawl freehub mechanism.

The Mavic Aksium One Disc Wheelset comes in one color and with BR101 quick releases, rim strips, user guide and warranty card. The wheelset can accommodate 15mm thru-axles, but also comes with adapters to accept standard quick-release mounting systems. Choose between a Campagnolo-compatible or a Shimano/SRAM-compatible freehub body. Both 6-bolt and Centerlock rotor mounts are offered, but Centerlock mounts are only available with the Shimano/SRAM freehub body model.
